You know you're a home brewer when?

When you look down into the unirnal after a pee and think, "Good head retention."

    Whirlpool Basic Questions

Yes to the first question. By keeping the hot wort in motion, the whirlpool should decrease the time required to chill with your immersion chiller. Regarding the chiller interfering with the formation of the trub cone, I can't say. I'd wager a lot depends on the geometry of your specific...

    how to remove pipe tape?

This weekend I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to remove the Teflon tape from my kettle's valve and thermometer. Is there a trick to it that I just don't know? It used to be easier before my roll of thicker tape ran out before this batch, but it still was a PITA. Any and all...

What breweries or beers to try while in California?

On your way from The City to Paicines (which I had to look up on google even though I've lived in the San Jose area since 1997), stop in at El Toro in Morgan Hill. Good stuff. You can't go wrong with everyone's prior suggestions either.

Can you Brew It recipe for Firestone Walker Union Jack

Just bottled this last night. Here's a list of mistakes I made when I brewed it. 1. I mashed too hot. I just left it for an hour at 150F. 2. I boiled too hard and got just 3.5 gallons in the fermenter @ 1.082 OG 3. I let a lot of cold-break and hops into the fermenter 4. I pitched...

Help! My thermometer dial is upside down

Hello out there in homebrew land. My brew kettle has a welded 1/2" FPT port for a dial thermometer. Problem is, in order to get a good, leak free seal I have to screw in my 1/2" MPT thermometer as far as it will go, and that leaves the dial upside down, making it slightly harder to read. I...

Path to Make a Career Out of Brewing

Must have meant they started right after graduating high school, which sounds like the perfect time to start brewing. If money's important, you'll probably make a lot more as a chemical engineer than as a brewer. On the other hand, brewing is a lot more fun. Keep homebrewing and learn...

    Brewing With The Seasons

FWIW, -5C is not 41F. 5C is 41F, though. And now, that nit has been fully picked.

    US-05 Starter?

I'm RDWHAHB-ing all over myself, as I tend to do, when I say to just rehydrate your single packet of US05 and pitch it. It ought to be able to handle 1.060. If you insist on doing a starter, that should be fine, too.

Total NooB and it's already becoming too much

Another option to consider: A long-ass time ago I brewed with extract. Then a couple years ago my wife got me this Brooklyn Brew Shop 1-gallon kit: http://brooklynbrewshop.com/beer-making-kits/everyday-ipa-1-gal-kit along with their recipe book...
