My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

That's the best stirplate case I've seen. Nicely done. :mug:

    Does this look infected?

After further inspection after work tonight, it looks like it is just bubbles. Damn, could it be any more evident what a newb I am..:smack:

    Does this look infected?

Moved this to secondary a few days ago and just saw this this morning. Is this an infection? Hard to get a good close up picture through the Carboy but it looks like the stuff we used to culture in microbiology back in the day. Dammit...

    Brewmasters Warehouse

I've had the same experience with BMW as pretty much everyone else. I stick with LHBS, MoreBeer or Northern Brewer now.

Northern Brewer Plinian legacy - your experiences ?

That's genius. I'm doing that from now on. I pretty much always screw one of them up. One too many homebrews on brew day. Side note: I brewed this on 3/15 and just took my first reading from primary. Sitting at 1.014 now. Tomorrow I'll rack to secondary and get ready for the dry hopping. The...

    First time carboy fermentation

I guess I'm just one of those folks that likes to secondary. Just took a reading and I'm at 1.014 so I'll move it over tomorrow.

    First time carboy fermentation

Yeah, there are two dry hop additions which is why I'm planning to move to secondary. I'll take a reading tomorrow and see what it's sitting at. Sounds like the FG should be somewhere around 1.010

    Steeping Grains - How To?

I've been throwing mine in around 130 and letting them hang while the kettle gets up to about 170. After reading these and some others, sounds like the way to go is to pop them in at about 155-160 and turn off the heat and let them soak. I don't see any harm in sparging them either.

Northern Brewer Plinian legacy - your experiences ?

Make sure you have a blow off set up and know that it's a 6gal batch, not 5gal.

    First time carboy fermentation

Definitely should have put the carboy into a water bath from the get go. That was dumb. I'll give it a few more days, take a reading and go from there.

    First time carboy fermentation

This is my first time using a carboy for primary (or at all, actually). On 3/14 I brewed NB's Plinian Legacy (extract). It appears that the layer of yeast near the top (just below the krausen) has dropped off since there was a distinct "creamy" looking layer there yesterday. And it looks like...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

I wouldn't worry about it. I ran mine for four solid days just to see. Granted I work 12 hour shifts so I was off all four days and was checking on it periodically. Didn't even warm up a bit at all.

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

If you are using the dual magnet setup the best way to get them in the right position is to stick the stir bar you will be using directly onto the magnets and position them so that they do not extend beyond the length of your stir bar. That worked for me. And also try ibrewmyown's suggestion of...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Adam, like ibrewmyown mentioned, try using a stirbar that has the rib/ring around the middle of it (if you're not already). I ended up putting a piece of that anti-skid drawer liner stuff under my flask and that quieted it down a bit. I also noticed that once I got my Pyrex brand flask, as...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Looks good! Just make sure those wires are secured in a way there's no risk of them getting into the fan. The one other thing that I did was put some hot glue around the power source cord on the inside of the box so that it couldn't get pulled on. Or find a tight rubber grommet or something.

    Plinian Legacy OG way off

That makes sense. Thinking back on it now, I may have done the shaking of the carboy after taking my measurement. On the plus side, brew day went significantly better than prepping my starter last night. That ended in my laptop dying after the Erlenmeyer flask explosively boiled over and...

    Plinian Legacy OG way off

Kent, yeah that's the kit. Gavin, did the boil and then cooled with my chiller to 100F. Poured from BK through a strainer into my carboy which had about 2.5gal of cool water in it. Then added about .5-.75gal more to get the total volume up to 6gal. Used a large syringe with tubing to pull a...

    Plinian Legacy OG way off

Brewed NBs Plinian Legacy extract kit today. My OG was 1.040 instead of my target of 1.070. Followed directions to a T with two exceptions: 1) forgot to add the .25oz Amarillo when steeping grains before boil (so I threw them in before adding the 4lbs DME) and 2) used the full 1lb of corn sugar...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Awesome. Used mine for 48 hours just as a test with no problems and no holes or anything in it.

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

-From what I've learned, you don't need this huge gnarly vortex to get the effects. I've been told you simply need enough force to make a small divot in the surface to get the yeasties enough aeration. From your picture, you could probably even back the speed down a bit. -Definitely go with...
