Water Cooler Refrigeration Components Fermentation Chiller

A lady at work was throwing away a fairly new water chiller(that you put the big 5 gal bottles on), so I took out the refrigerating components to use for a fermentation chiller. I plan to make a box out of plywood and 1" foam board and mount the chiller coil to the top back of the box. Then...

    They CLAIMED it was pasteurized....

So I bought some cider from Champlain Orchards in VT to make a Christmas cider. On the bottles it said pasteurized, but it also said to keep them cool. So I got them home, and didn't have enough fridge space, but I figured if they were pasteurized, there would be no chance for wild yeast...

Is my cider done? (after 2 months)

So I made a hard cider using 5 gallons of apple juice and 2 pounds of dextrose. I used Hefeweizen IV Ale Yeast WLP380 yeast. It's been over 2 months (started on 6/8/08) with one stuck fermentation at 1.030 that was restarted just by swirling the carboy. It's now at 1.005 and has been for a...

Got a free IC. What should I do with it??

Well I was at my second homebrew club meeting last night, and one of the guys there gave me a 25' Immersion Chiller. Now normally I would use it as it was intended to be used, but I already have a counterflow chiller. Should I use it as a prechiller for the counterflow chiller...

My lucky day!!! (Basically free kegs)

So I was over at my beer store picking up some flip top bottles, and apparently they're closing in a few months (which sucks) but the guy there said "hey I have some Cornelius kegs too if you want them". I was expecting the average price, but he gave me 3 of them for $5 a PIECE!!!! I wasn't...

Used the wrong kind of tubing for hot siphon. Help?

So I made a batch today and used my new counterflow wort chiller. The only problem was that I used this tubing, which as I know now is rated at 140 F. The end that was in the wort was very soft and almost a little sticky on the outside, but it held together ok. Any thoughts? Also...

    Apfelwein!!!

This is an apfelwein made with White labs Hefe Weizen yeast. Just starting to ferment. I put the pot there to catch any excess krausen. Switched to a 3 piece airlock, fermentation is getting pretty vigorous. (note the splatter on the underside of the table) Switched to a...

So I racked to the secondary today, and noticed that my beer is VERY orange... It tastes great, but I've never seen a beer that orange before. Any thoughts? I know it looks like I'm drinking it, but I'm not, I swear. This was also my first batch, and I'm pretty happy about how...

    Question about outdoor brewing

I have a grill that has a 12,000 btu side burner. I know thats not that much, but considering my stove inside has 9,000 btu burners, its a step up. My question is: is it ok to brew outside, or do you run the risk of contamination from pollutants in the air. Thanks in advance, Ben

    Defiant Brewing Company

Anyone here ever been to Defiant Brewing Company in Pearl River NY? A bunch of people recommended it to me, so I decided to stop by there today. They are a small brewery in a warehouse with a bar right in front of the tanks. Today they had Muddy Creek Lager, Kolsch and Porter, all of which...
