    Wilserbrewerbags vs The Brew Bag

I bought a wilser bag and it works great! My false bottom broke which dropped the bag on top of my heating element and it burned a few small holes in my bag. Wilser let me send it back and fixed it, even though not his fault, and let me order a backup at a discount. Huge +1 for him. Great...

    No Chill Brewing

That's a great idea. It's difficult for me to try new yeast given the amount of time (and some $ investment) to possibly make something I like less or worse hate! A tasting night with same wort but different yeasts would be a great way to broaden our horizons.

    No Chill Brewing

I've not tried this but I can say with a 20 gal pot the difference in me brewing a 5 gal batch vs 10 gal is < 20 mins of extra time to double the batch. If you had limited space to ferment you could easily brew a larger batch all at once then ferment the 2nd half as soon as you finished...

Making Scoby from nothing... My experiment

Although the amazon route seems easiest, I must say I'm curious what your results are if you decide to create your own scoby. Please update if you do :)

    Float switch in Recirculating EBIAB?

Interesting idea, but I'd not want to put another hole in the side of my pot. I've had recirc issues using a pump like you described and learned 2 things. 1) You can restrict the pump OUTFLOW (never pump inflow) and control this. I had visible wort in my biab bag and didnt notice the level...

    DIY Fast Ferment Conical Fermenter

Love the idea, but with commentary on the forums about a scratch in a fermenter and someone having infection problems despite strict sanitation I'd have some concerns. But...I have a 20 gal pot and when I do only 5 gal batches its hard to get enough depth in my pot for my wort chiller, so I...

    PB2 and Vodka

Put your vodka and PB2 in a mason jar. Most extracts are done over weeks-months. I'd at least give it a week. Shake it daily. I usually pour through a coffee filter to get rid of particulate mater, but if your are going to use gelatin in a keg it will probably settle on the bottom with the...

    Fermentation Temperature Control Issue

I got a small chest freezer for fermenting with an inkbird temp controller. Works great! Only thing is...consider how much you will be brewing. I started brewing a 5 gal batch, then realized hey it's only about 20 mins more work to brew 10 gals...and then I had 2 ferm buckets. Since brewing...

    Question about recirculating with BIAB

Another good reason to restrict flow - you can pull wort out of the pot faster than it filters back through the grains and run the pump dry and/or if you have a heating element in there and expose it allowing it to burn whatever is on the element and potentially crack your element. A lot of...

New grain mill, now getting rubbish efficiency?

Doing biab...I'd definitely go for a fine crush. I have a Wilser bag (check out his post above). It's a fine weave so you can crush those grains fine. Which is only really relevant because I can buy a 5 gal kit, scale up the water to 5.5 because I want to NET 5 gal in my keg after losses...

    New BIAB False Bottoms

I was excited to try out my new 17.5" false bottom yesterday and ditch my pizza tin for good. I put in 4 legs on outer ring and left out the middle leg as my heating element was in the way. When putting it in the pot its a great fit. There is also no discernible flex in it like there was...

What size batches do you brew?

I like others brew 11 gal batches to try and net to full 5 gal kegs. I estimated it takes about 15-20 additional minutes to brew 11 vs. 5.5 (little bit extra time grinding grains, spliting into 2 fermenters) I've also been doing back to back brews at times. Your setup/teardown/cleanup will be...

I fell into running boil kettle (photos)

Crap! I just brewed last weekend wearing crocs and almost fell on my butt when I hit a wet spot. You have made me reconsider the consequences of doing that next to my boiling pot! Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to change the shoes I wear and maybe put down a no skid mat. Wishing you a...

Might give up on homebrew :(

Without details it is difficult to offer good advice, but I too moved from extract to all grain and had a few issues along the way...but it is doable. "but again not quite as good as my local brew pub or a commercial beer" I think that's the focal point. So..what are you trying to make that...

Who uses dry and who uses liquid

Lately I've only been using dry yeast. If you looking to replicate a specific style or love to experiment with seasonal yeasts liquid may be your only choice, but I made my choice for practical reasons No starter needed (unless brewing a big beer or lager) - I dont like having to make my...

    Water Source

Some hoses seem to impart a plastic smell/taste to the water. I used to bring home the "safe" hose from my RV on brew days and thats just a pain. $18 will buy you a 50' RV Fresh Water Hose, $10 will get you the 25' at walmart. I also got a sprayer attachment for the end of the hose so I didnt...

    GFCI/Spa Panel overheating! Help!!

I agree, remove ALL connections to that spa panel, inspect and redo as if it was a new install. Being very careful, I might out of curiosity use my infrared thermometer on the wire terminals & the circuit breaker at room temp, under load after x mins a few times) to see where the heat build up...

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

It would be nice if it used a stainless steel bottom cap with an actual probe on the inside of the SS cap. I'd rather have true liquid temps and it would be a fast calibration and cut down on their temp related customer service issues. A BrewPi integration for dummies would also boost sales a bit.

Examining possible solutions to issue of sulfur smell from Perlick 650ss faucets

Update: Sent Perlick back a note referencing my case# & telling them my replacement RMA'd faucets still have a sulfur smell, asked if they could provide 304 grade stainless replacement parts or stainless parts that had been properly passivated. Their response...none. Have to say I'm...
