What to do with 2nd runnings

Hey guys Made a bit RIS this past weekend and my final runnings were 1.055 so I decided to collect more for another brew. Sanitized a carboy and collected about 6 more gallons. Thinking of putting in the pot to boil with some hops. Would this be just a "session" RIS? Maybe half the amount...

Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout Recipe Critique

I actually added in some 120 last minute. In Yoopers oatmeal stout she specifically mentioned the Victory adding some toffee notes which I thought might be nice. I read in another article bout how much oats to add. The article mentioned up to 10% can be used without a special mash, more than...

Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout Recipe Critique

I first tried this recipe from homebrewtalk https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=238807 Thought it was thin, not much chocolate roast, and I thought dark fruit/raisin notes dominated. I really like Jackie O's here in Ohio so didn't want to give up on special b malt so made my...

What does "recently dumped" mean for my newly acquired balcones barrel

Guys Not sure which section to post this in, I got a balcones barrel from black friday. Date on it says it was dumped 11/2/16. Is this considered "freshly" dumped? The reason I ask is because everything I am reading here on the forums says to keep it wet inside with come cheap bourbon to...

Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout Recipe Critique

Oops, for some reason my water to grist ratio was 4! Good catch. Changed it to 1.33. Somewhere I read (cant remember) it's better to have a thicker or thinner mash with dark beers? Scott

Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout Recipe Critique

It's a 2 hr boil and I've read than stouts like Ten Fidy and BCBC are brewed with a really long boil.

Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout Recipe Critique

Haven't done the water profile yet. I guess since I'm doing so much oatmeal I can lower the temp. Probably should add some rice hulls.

Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout Recipe Critique

Guys On my third try for a stout. Hoping to get some help here. Goal is a big thick stout, motor oil color and thickness. Roasty, chocolate, coffee, but not overly bitter. Will be putting in a 5 gallon balcones barrel. Probably one of my favorite stouts to drink is BORIS from...

    Water treatments and eherms help

Thanks The problem I had was adjusting the sparge pH. When I use my 3 vessel eherms, I fill my 15 gal HLT to about 10 gallons. I transfer over my strike water to my MLT. I treat the water with my salts and lactic acid. That's easy. I then refill my HLT to about 10 gallons which covers...

    Water treatments and eherms help

Guys just thought of this as I heat up the strike water in my HLT. I put 10 gallons of water in to start. Use about 5 gallons for strike today. First time treating my water based on bru n water spreadsheet. It says to add my salts per 5 gallons of strike and then the sparge. Obviously I have...

Slow rise to HLT temp My PIN TD4

It's full blast then when it was getting to maybe 15 degrees of set it would pulse. This is the part that would take a long time. I found this thread: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=405744 I re-ran auto tune as if I was actually going to brew. 10g in my HLT, got my temp...
