    Growing Hops in Charlotte

sounds good - is it normal for it to have a shoot grow off the old/dead bine? Or should the new shoots come from the dirt/ground/rhizome?

    Growing Hops in Charlotte

realized I did not tag you in my post -- alright... spring weather is upon us! Time to start of year two. I have no idea where to start. Do I need to cut back all of the old/dead vines? I never got around to that. I noticed last night that there was a shoot starting to come out of a "dead" vine...

I noticed last night that there was a shoot starting to come out of a "dead" vine just above the ground. Any tips would be...

    Temp swings using ITC 308

have you tried to calibrate your ITC? I had an issue where I realized mine was having swings all the way up to 10 degrees off. Had to calibrate and adjust. Eventually the issue led to a few frozen kegs and I ended up buying another inkbird.

    Drying Hops Idea

Thanks for the feedback! If I do lay on a screen/etc how long do you imagine it would take? Few hours of a fan or a few days? Sounds good I plan to use them mid September so sounds like ziplock bag will work. I did speak to someone else in my area that has cascade hops too and he told me I'm...

    Drying Hops Idea

Hi All- I believe I'm quickly approaching my first harvest of my cascade hops (located: Charlotte, NC). I had planned to brew a wet hop IPA, but life/work is getting in the way and I don't believe I will be able to brew before they need to be harvested. So now I'm coming up with ideas to dry...

Homebrew Comp -- suggestion for which category

Hi All! Ended up placing 2nd in 18A American Blonde for my hoppy blonde. Thanks all for the suggestions! The Peanut Butter Cup stout was mentioned to be a tad of out category which was my bad listing it as an imperial when it probably more drinks like a regular stout, but was stil fine for...

    Adding coffee flavor to beer?

I recently added 4oz of uncrushed beans to my american blonde ale for 48 hours. Tossed them in without a bag and it has a truly amazing coffee nose and wonderful coffee undertones like I was looking for. I added mine during the cold crash and after 48 hours kegged it up. Do you have temp...

Homebrew Comp -- suggestion for which category

Thank you everyone for the input and suggestions! Since I was allotted for just two entries I put the hoppy blonde in 18A and the imperial peanut butter cup stout in 30A S/H/V. Competition is next Saturday -- patiently will be awaiting the results!

Homebrew Comp -- suggestion for which category

only 23 IBUs - the base recipe is for my american blonde. Then dry hopped for a week with 1 oz centennial, 1oz citra, 1oz cascade. It's a nice touch, but not toooo crazy hop forward.

Appreciate the quick response! Sounds good for the peanut butter cup -- It requires labeling/mentioning the specific ingredient for that one. So even though powdered peanut butter and cacao nibs (at least I don't think) are considered a spice, herb or vegetable... are they? Thanks!

Homebrew Comp -- suggestion for which category

Hi All- Entering a local homebrew competition that follows 2015 BJCP for style registration. Will be dropping off my entries on Friday and was looking for feedback on which categories to enter them in to. I brewed: hoppy blonde ale (blonde ale base with 3 oz dry hop) peanut butter cup...

Hoppy Blonde Ale -- dry hop suggestions

Want them present and great aroma. I said what the heck and actually just tossed in an ounce of citra, ounce of cascade, and ounce of centennial. With the light base beer I’m guessing those three ounces should go a long way. I’ll let it sit and start to drop the temp to cold crash Friday...
