Sodium Percarbonate vs. OneStep, Easy-Clean, etc.

HBT, I know this has been touched upon in previous threads, but I would like to ask if anyone has an opinion on using pure sodium percarbonate instead of proprietary blends like One Step or Easy Clean. What would be the advantage of blending sodium percarbonate with sodium carbonate, for...

Still making bad beer after 30+ batches.

How does one calibrate a thermometer at strike temp? Sounds like a good plan, because I don't quite trust the ice and boiling water methods.

    Bottle cleaning?

I would argue that rinsing is not always sufficient. A bit of residual crud will still be there, even if it is not apparent. I think a good way to go is to triple rinse after opening, then later on do a one-step soak (or other sodium percarbonate based cleaner), then finally hit those bottles...

    Trouble with water spreadsheets

That is superb. Thanks, Mr. Delange! That water is from the Denniston Water Project, by the way, in California. Cool to know I can recreate that profile from RO. Much appreciated.

Safety Concerns using feed grade barley

Okay, here's what happened with this project. Thread resurrection time! I went ahead and soaked the grains in a bucket, scooped off the chaff that rose to the top, and repeated that process a few times. Not much dirt or chaff present - maybe two cups worth. The raw barley smelled like dried hay...

    Trouble with water spreadsheets

Whatup, HBT soldiers! I'm having some difficulty using the available water spreadsheets, and I'm at the point where I need some help. I've read Brungard's Water Knowledge, as well as most of Palmer's Water book, so I have an idea of mash ph, buffering, alkalinity, and the various salts and acids...

    The best bottles for bottling.

I've become a fan of the Anchor bottles. I've noticed the inner diameter is slightly larger than many other bottles, which makes it easier to get a bottle brush in there. The shape is pretty unique as well.

Safety Concerns using feed grade barley

Well then it's settled. I will do a thorough washing and see what I'm dealing with. I'll post my results as this project progresses. Malt, I can't help but notice that you may have joined the forum to respond to my post. Your input has been greatly appreciated! Sounds like you have some malting...

Safety Concerns using feed grade barley

Malt, you are the man. Thanks again for weighing in. I spoke to a rep at Volkman who was very hesitant to give me any concrete answers, since they are not involved with the production, and they don't want to advise people to use the product for human use (for legal reasons). He did mention...

Safety Concerns using feed grade barley

Thanks for the info! I appreciate the reply. I will have to investigate a bit further and see what Volkman has to say. Not too excited about pesticide residue.

Safety Concerns using feed grade barley

Now that's an idea! I am definitely going to give it a try. Thanks for the input and encouragement, amigos. I love these experiments.

Safety Concerns using feed grade barley

$21. Not a great deal once you factor in the labor of malting, but it should be a fun experiment.

Safety Concerns using feed grade barley

So I just purchased a 50 lb. sack of barley from my local feed store with the intention of malting it myself and/or roasting some for a stout. The product was labeled "malting barley" and it was produced by the Volkman Seed Company. I noticed, however, that it says "feed grade, not for human...

Reusing water from chiller; Washing Machine question

I've heard that some people like to recycle the water exiting their immersion chillers by using it for a load of laundry. In one of his Youtube vids, Don O. runs a hose from the output of his chiller directly to the top of his washing machine. My question is, do most washing machines have a...

Fittings for DIY wort chiller build

Hello Friends, Due to my poor plumbing knowledge, I am having a bit of difficulty figuring out what fittings/connectors I will need for my DIY immersion chiller project. I intend to solder the fittings rather than using a hose clamp setup, and I am curious how others have approached this. My...
