    Wood-Aged Beer Pirate Strong Ale

Wow this was a while ago. Been pulling on this keg for a while now, but it's really come around the last few weeks. It ended up around 9%, the kveiking yeast was a beast. Not a ton of yeast character even after fermenting hot and fast, but definitely on the boozy side. It's mellowed out some...

    Are solar panels worth it?

Check those numbers... There's no way the electric company is going to pay you more for the electricity than they sell it for. They pay back at wholesale rates which is generally about 1/4 of your cost. At last account true-up in March, I was paying 9 cents per kWh and the electric company...

    Are solar panels worth it?

Check out energysage.com. Companies can do a fair bit of analysis up front to get you in the ballpark for the initial cost/benefit, then you can whittle it down to whatever the top 2 or 3 are to do site visits and fine tune the proposals. That is how we started out and it worked out well, and...

    Wood-Aged Beer Pirate Strong Ale

Almost 8 gal at 1.061 into the kettle...right on target. I think I'm going to call it "Tropical Shipwreck". LHBS was out of citra so subbing in an oz each of cascade and motueka. Also holding the pineapple over to the secondary.

    Wood-Aged Beer Pirate Strong Ale

Brewing this as an all-grain batch this weekend, using Imperial Kveiking yeast. Going to find the hottest room in the house and let it rip and see what happens

    Cloning Yuengling's Hershey Porter

Tried half a glass last night...it's ok. I would probably double the cacao nibs and cut the syrup addition at the end in half. It's also still a little undercarbed. Head retention initially looks terrible, but that may still be from the lack of carb. I have half a keg of robust porter on tap...

    Post filtering cocoa powder question

You'd need to do a closed transfer through a filter using pressurized co2 to avoid oxidizing the whole batch...something like this: https://www.morebeer.com/products/beer-plate-filter-kit.html Fining with gelatin might work.

Finally kegged this over the weekend. Took a sample and added some Hershey's syrup to backsweeten and flavor. The base beer is decent, pretty muted character, but that may just be the lack of carbonation. Ended up adding 40oz of syrup, which was .75oz per 12oz. On gas now to carbonate, we'll...

12 Beers of Christmas 2020 Edition

I just brewed a Belgian dubbel and set aside 3 gal to do on tart cherries. I saved your recipe from the swap a few years ago as my baseline. For the three gal, I used four cans of tart cherries in juice, which really didn't do too much. I ended up adding another 24oz of cheribundi tart cherry...

Took a gravity reading yesterday. It's down to about 1.008 and looks like it's about done. Took a taste and it's....meh. It is still very turbid, and I've never used S23 before so I'm not sure how long it generally takes to clean up, but right now it's looking like I will cold crash...

    Cloning Yuengling's Hershey Porter

Sorry just realized I never updated the actual volumes. I ended up using 7.5oz of cocoa powder at 10min in the boil, then added the cacao nibs/vodka tincture and 12oz by weight of Hershey's syrup into secondary. My efficiency was low on the mash due to a poor crush so my OG was a little low...

    Cloning Yuengling's Hershey Porter

Yeah see post three, I followed the recipe in the first post then used the additions in post three, it just finished up secondary fermentation activity after adding the chocolate syrup, I'll probably give it another week in the fermenter and then keg.

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

Just finished Turn on Netflix. Great show, four seasons so it will keep you busy for a while if you're into historical fact-based fiction. Also Love Death and Robots was freaking awesome, if you're into dystopian fiction or liked The Animatrix you'll love it, S2 coming pretty soon I think.

    Cloning Yuengling's Hershey Porter

Brewed this on Monday, ended up starting with 7.5oz of cocoa powder (5gal batch) added at 10 min in the boil, it's fermenting away now so I'll see how it tastes prior to secondary to determine the rest. I have 2.5oz of cacao nibs sitting in vodka right now so plan on adding all that, plus maybe...
