    False bottom, rubbermaid cooler MT and 3 stuck sparges in a row

    I have a similar setup, but using SS instead of tubing. never had a stuck sparge & don't have to worry about being too aggressive with my mash paddle. You can also see the bottom is notched so that even if it sits on the bottom, there's still plenty of room for flow.

    There's a ton of variables here. So you are saying you've brewed the same beer with the same processes (grain crush, water volumes, etc), and had different results? Mash PH can also affect conversion, are you using measuring PH? I'm in farm country & my municipal water varies greatly from one...

    I've done the MB kit before & it was good, but due to faults of my own, it was no Pliny. Process is more important than ingredients - give the same ingredients to two different brewers & you'll end up with two different beers. So it's going to be hard to poll the community for a subjective...

    Overflowing foam!

    same experience from aquarium pump through stone, some times it foams crazy & others it doesn't. mine foamed like crazy for my first few brews & didn't for the next few. I even bought a replacement filter thinking it was clogged or something, and boiled the crap out of my stone. Not sure how...

    How long will milled grain stay fresh?

    bakeries != breweries. Nor are they coffee shops. Metaphors in general don't apply, I agree. also agree proper conditions are key. Would be hesitant to buy pre-milled grains where I didn't know the conditions they are stored, or how long ago they were milled.

    Yeast for chocolate stout

    I'm doing Jamil's Triple-x sweet stout tomorrow & staying true to "brewing classic styles" I've got a Wyeast 1099 Whitbread ale starter on the stir plate tonight :). Having said that I've used 05 in a KBS clone with good success.

    How long will milled grain stay fresh?

    anecdotes are fun & all, but wondering if anyone has any science behind this? With coffee, for example, it's pretty well known that freshness of grind is important. logically that should apply to barley & pretty much any other grain too, does it not?

    Overflowing foam!

    are you using aquarium pump & getting 02 from atmosphere (20%)? Or using an oxygen tank with pure oxygen? That is an important detail....
