    DIY inline refractometer

I will definitely keep testing, with icing sugar in luke warm water, then stirring both gave almost exactly 1 brix. And the same again for ~8 brix.

    DIY inline refractometer

You could well be right that it does affect it somewhat, but in a simple test I've done using the same distilled water, both read more or less bang on 0 brix. With the refractometer immersed in a glass, and with a sample reading with the 'lid' on. Maybe it would affect it more when sugar is...

    DIY inline refractometer

Just got some more parts: I just found the thermowell is too big alas, so ordering a new one that's built into a 1.5" pipe with ferrules either end. So I can do away with the top cross too. Need to punch a hole in the triclamp blanking plate for the refractometer now.

    DIY inline refractometer

Thanks I just gave the SD card a bit of a push and made sure the USB was pushed in, but no LED activity alas :( I'll get another pi zero soon I think. I just got a triclamp sightglass which the refractometer can sit in, however this is the cylinder type sight glass which is rather heavy! I'm...

    DIY inline refractometer

Thanks for the replies :) I think unfortunately I may have damaged the Pi by placing it so close to the refractometer as it got hot (at least that's the only reason I can currently think of for it not turning on now). I'm currently looking at ordering a sight glass and triclamp tees, so that I...

    DIY inline refractometer

I've just been working on a little attempt at using a normal refractometer 'inline' so that I can measure the brix of the wort during mashing and sparging. Today I just conducted a simple test heating water from around 17C to just below 70C before the pi crashed, I believe because of how I'd...

    Bubbler-Logger - A fermentation logger measusing CO2 sound-bubbles to calculate SG!

Cool project, I did something similar with a microphone and Pi to capture the bubble sounds : https://www.anfractuosity.com/projects/bubbleometer/ https://github.com/anfractuosity/bubbleometer The graph I generated - Seemed to match roughly with the IR approach from sparkfun, interestingly I...

    Starch haze question

Hi, Thanks a lot for the in-depth reply! I'll have to do some more googling about amylopectin. The reason I was asking the question, was that I was worried about starch haze possibly being present in my beer, however it looks like that thankfully isn't the case, as adding gelatin seems to be...

    Starch haze question

Hi, I'm just wondering, say wort had starch haze after mashing, would the wort remain hazy after both mash and boil. So I mean, if the wort after boiling and using protofloc, was crystal clear, it would be unlikely that after fermentation, the cause of haze would be starch related? Cheers!

Inkbird Amazon Lighting Deal for ITC-308/WiFi Temperature Controller

I'm sorry to bother you, but I can't for the life of me work out how to get the inkbird app to connect to just the inkbird controller, without using a router. I can get my phone to sometimes connect to the inkbird wifi, but I can't seem to get the app to talk to it, any ideas?

Inkbird Amazon Lighting Deal for ITC-308/WiFi Temperature Controller

Hi, I'm just wondering if you could tell me, does this connect to a wifi router. Or does it act as an access point itself (which the phone then connects to)?

Colour of boiled hops in just water seems wrong

The hop boiling was initially just to test a whirlpool paddle that I bought, to see how the whirlpool worked, however that failed rather miserably, as the drill I've got is ancient and doesn't have speed control, so it ended up spinning the paddle so fast in the water, that it bent the paddle.

    Packaged DO ppb values

Wow that's very impressive! Out of interest, I'm curious how he cans those, as with the small can seamers I've seen you can on foam (I've no idea if that's similar to how canning works commercially or not though), roughly how would you avoid adding oxygen during canning.

    Packaged DO ppb values

I'm curious what ppb values people are getting for DO after kegging/..? Has anyone compared the same brewing process with using Metabisulfite and not using it, in terms of packaged O2? It sounds like in a commercial brewery they can achieve around 100ppb or less. Cheers

Colour of boiled hops in just water seems wrong

brewbama - That's very interesting that you found a difference in colour with pellets and hop flowers over night! Dgallo - I hadn't thought about that! That's a good point, the bucket didn't have an air lock on or anything, so that would make sense I guess!

Colour of boiled hops in just water seems wrong

The only ideas I can think of at the moment, is if the immersion element has possibly effected the colour of them somehow? But I'd be surprised if that was the case? The fact my water is only around 30ppm or so in calcium shouldn't affect this should it? I saw this interesting pH image here -...

Colour of boiled hops in just water seems wrong

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone has got any ideas here. I boiled 30l of water (this wasn't wort, just plain water) for approx. 45 mins with 100g of pellet hops in a hop spider. I've extracted around 20l of water, but the water appears pretty dark brown, which doesn't seem right to me, as it...

    Filtering DIY

I've done that, it does work for a few pints or so, but I think it seemed to start to get blocked after that, you can back flush the filter with water, which did help to some degree. It does noticeably also alter the beer's flavour...

Homebrew Beer filter. No more secondary Ferm?

Not sure if this is of any interest or not but I got a cheapish .1micron filter to play with - https://www.anfractuosity.com/homebrewing/filtering-beer-with-0-1-micron-absolute-filter/ It does effect the taste noticeably though.

    Mixed apparent attenuation calculation

I think I worked it out, you can seemingly sum the two separate FGs for sugar + malt doing: (FG1 + FG2) - 1
