Is bathroom light bad for beer?

I let my stuff ferment in the bathroom as well. I have saved a few big boxes, and i place them over my primary ferments to protect them from the light.

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

Hey guys, I am new to home brewing (2-3 batches done and bottled so far) and just came across this post. I am looking at this recipe, and all of the subsequent recipes, and am excited to try my own variation. I was wondering if I would be able to use vienna malt in this recipe at all...

    Imperial Red / Red IPA

I know this post is a little bit old by now, but I came across this recipe today and it looks great! Does anyone have any advice as to how one would go about brewing this in a small batch (1 or 2 gallons) I typically brew smaller batches until I find a recipe that really really works for me...

    TV Shows About Brewing

Brew Masters, which had 1 season (5 episodes), was aired on Discovery and was really good. It followed Dogfish head brewery and their process of making a bunch of different craft beers. I thought it was really interesting and for the most part not too cheesy. I heard that for political...

    Tasted my first beer

The waiting is over, I finally got to taste my first beer! I tried one a little bit early (8 days after bottling), so I am hoping/expecting it to get a little bit better, however so far it is ok. Not my favorite but it tastes like beer. Hopefully if I let the rest of the bottles sit for...

    LA, SF, Portland

If you are driving from LA to SF, when you get off the 5 onto the 580 there is a brand new brewery there called Altamont Beer Works. It's in Livermore, CA. It isn't well known or anything, but its really new and they make some great beers. Especially if you like good hop tasting beers. Just...

How fast can you really get through a batch?

Hey guys, So I have been brewing small batches (1 gallon), and only started about a month ago. I have done a cider, a norther brewer kit, and a wheat beer recipe I found on this site. Basically, I am getting tired of waiting and I am wondering how long do I have to wait? I bottled the...

Which Brew kit to start with

My advice is to go to a local homebrew store if you can find one. I bought everything from Northern Brewer, and although it was great, when I got around to going to a homebrew store my experience was so much better. Its just nice to be able to talk through problems. Plus, its easier to...

Cider been 5 months in Secondary. Its High ABV, Tastes good, cloudy tho still.

I cold crashed a cider the other day that was super cloudy. I took it out of the fridge today and it was crystal clear! And it shouldn't change your carbonation. If anything it will just slow it down for a few hours, but the yeast will live at the low temperatures just fine.

    TapIt Cap opinions?

Thats what I was thinking....but the tapit does have an emergency valve on it that is supposed to prevent that....

    TapIt Cap opinions?

Hey guys, So I know that this product has been talked about before, however when I searched through the old posts I didn't see anyone post about this that had actually tried it. I usually brew in smaller batches, and this looks like a product that could work great for me and would allow me...

How much yeast for 1 gallon batch?

Ive done 2, 1 gallon ciders and I pitch about 1/3 to 1/2 a pack of champagne yeast. It seems to work well. I have good fermentation after 24 hours and it carries on for a week or so.

    orange peels

Great question! I am a newbie and I have the same question. From what I have heard, you add orange peels (or whatever) to a secondary fermentation vessel. I have no clue if this is right though, and I have no clue how one would sanitize them. I would assume there are problems with...

Biohazard Lab Freezer, any way to sterilize?

Wipe it down with bleach and scrub it real good and you will be fine! Great find

    Did it ferment too fast?

I pitched pretty cold, probably about 60 degrees or just less, but i agree it probably got much too hot. My next purchase should probably be some sort of cooling system to control my wort temperature.

    Did it ferment too fast?

Hey guys, So up until this point I have only made ciders, however recently I made the jump to beer (its about time). I made the irish red from a northern brewer kit and everything seemed to go well (except for a little bit of excess splashing when transferring to the primary that has me...

Is pasteurizing necessary to avoid over carbonation?

Basically my title says it all.... Is pasteurizing necessary to avoid over carbonation? I am in almost ready to bottle my cider and I was just curious. My goal is to have a fairly dry carbonated cider. The bubbling has stopped completely and I am going to add 2 TBSPs of dextrose per...

How do you make a new recipe?

Hey guys, So I am new to this whole brewing thing, but so far I am enjoying it. I am starting off with some kits i can buy online to get my feet wet and make sure I can figure it all out since I figure there is less room for error on those. The reason I really want to home brew however is to...
