Omega Yeast “Born on” or “Best By” dates

Thanks for the replies, folks. The company from which I purchased this did get back to me to help get it sorted out. Like it has been said, the embossing was there, but REAL light. Hopefully this is permanently fixed because, it gave me a momentary heart attack!

Omega Yeast “Born on” or “Best By” dates

I couldn’t find anything in the forum on this, which leads me to 1 of 2 conclusions: First, this is a total anomaly, or second, I have missed it somewhere in the forum. I just ordered my first 2 packs of Omega Yeast and sat down to calculate my starters....but no dates on the packages. No “Born...

Mold in the blow-off tank... I'm freakin' out!

This just happened to me as well. A check of the beer shows what looks like it COULD be mold, but the krausen residue is so think I can't tell. I left the blow off on for about 11 days, kept telling myself to change it and kept getting distracted. I'm panicked.

    Black spots in yeats vial

That's good to hear coming from someone who has probably done more than I have. This is the first stage of the starter I made with the yeast which had the spots in the vial. I guess at the end of the day there's no cause for concern since it seemed to have gone through a healthy growth. I'm...

    Black spots in yeats vial

Incidentally, the starter is about 36 hours on now. It really took off last night before I went to work, I had to rig up a blow off assembly before I went to work because it was pushing out the foam stopper. Anyway, this is only my second starter and it looks and is acting differently from the...

    Black spots in yeats vial

Unfortunately I did not think to take a photo. I have heard about the spots in starters and on fermenters. These were actually floating IN the yeast vial prior to being opened.

    Black spots in yeats vial

So I am working on a yeast starter this evening. It's only my second starter, my 8th batch or so, so I am pretty green with this stuff. I am working with a White Labs vial of Vermont Ale Yeast manufactured on 01/28/2015. As I am cold crashing my wort I notice there are some black spots floating...

    Yeast Starter Quantity

New brewer here with only 5 batches in. I am going to make the jump to yeast starters for my next brew and am a bit puzzled. The process seems simple but in terms of quantity I don't know what to go with. From what I can find it seems that it can get very confusing with beer style/batch...

    Jasper's?

I had that problem as well but the difference from what was advertised was small enough I wasn't bothered. My bigger issues were the inconsistent carb and odd texture/mouthfeel. I have done two of their kits and really wanted to like them, but their products don't do it for me. Only other...

    Jasper's?

I found a formula that has worked in my situation. If I shake a bottle approximately 24 hours prior to opening, it has a good amount of carb. It's a pain, but it's better than wasting the batch. I may contact them as Point City advised, but it HAS been a while and the beer is half drank.

    Jasper's?

Tried the same formula with several bottles....totally random results. I would say I have gotten "normal" carb out of maybe, 1 out of every 5 bottles. Very disappointing. I also opened a 6 pack and added some sugar. That gave me absolutely no different result.

    Jasper's?

I experimented with one bottle. Shook it for a few days, cracked it open tonight and sure enough....more carbonation. I was pretty ecstatic.:rockin: I am still going to try adding some sugar though to some bottles to see what has a more desirable effect.

    Jasper's?

I did use the 5oz bag and boil it in the water, per instructions. I have not tried either the shaking (well, I did once, not for several days) nor adding more sugar. The idea of adding more sugar came up previously but I have been busy and forgot. I think I will try both in the coming days.

    Jasper's?

Well, it's been 5 weeks since bottling and no change. I gave a couple bottles to friends who agreed that the flavor is definitely there....just did not carbonate properly. It's disappointing but since the flavor is there I am definitely not dumping it. I just wish I knew the culprit. Now this...

    Jasper's?

I'm not dumping it yet, gonna continue testing it....After all, the flavor is there so it's not totally worthless. Just not sure how long I should wait to call it. And yes I monitored the storage temp. pretty closely. Hopefully it's inexperience, cuz like I said, the other batches I did all...

    Jasper's?

Well, opened 2 bottles today, 2 weeks after bottling. Very disappointed. Flavor is pretty good, but both bottles were flat. First batch I have ever done where this has happened. Pretty sure I kept the storage temp in the right area. Capper may be an issue, but I don't know, it's only the third...

    Jasper's?

So like I said previously, I am really new here. This is the first I have heard of this phenomenon. I will have to dig deeper into this topic. So do you recommend going through a whole steep and boil with no lid at all?
  18. Gaijin

    Jasper's?

Even with my trepidation and misgivings following the boil, I still have a good feeling about this brew. If it goes well, I will absolutely be purchasing from them again. Good luck with your IIPA.

    Jasper's?

I always use a lid. However, between me paying constant attention to the steep/boil and the highly active nature of this boil (seemed like the whole boil was one big hot break) the lid was CONSTANTLY on/off, on/off, on/off. What you said about the boil off being mostly water makes sense. My...
