    Confession Time

Ive stuck my glass wine thief down through the airlock hole and hoovered up a good many ounces of fine aging brew. On occasion. In the interest of regular quality control of course....

    Confession Time

I drained the last couple gallons of a pale ale keg into the last couple gallons of a stout keg, tossed in a vanilla bean and a couple chunks of charred white oak sticks that I soaked overnight in bourbon and and called it a Bourbon Barrel Vanilla Porter. It was damn fine. Only an uptight...

How long have you suffered through bad batch of homebrew?

Life's too damn short for self flaggelation. Ive dumped batches that sat on the tap line too long to make room for something better. No regrets.

How long have you suffered through bad batch of homebrew?

On a batch of lager I got a little too carried away with the flavor malts in the grain bill. It was ok but too heavy, and just off character. I choked down half the keg before I said f it, and poured in a 12 pack of Miller Lite I had left over from a party (dont give me no grief...

    Don't Do That.

Drink a little too much doing a double batch and pitch the lager yeast in the IPA. And then for a sharp stick in the other eye, of course have no f'n lager yeast anymore for the lager. DoubleFornicated.

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

haha ya, thats a nod to their new Belgian owners, and their owners favorite beer. Does the recipe have 0.5 oz hops per batch and a 30% corn grain bill?

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

Seems appropriate, considering bud = piss

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

Its always a sad day when corporate behemoths take over the little guy. But come on folks, sacks of grain are much cheaper picked up locally from the LHBS. And hops are much cheaper by the pound from hops folks online (like YakimaValley). Hardware is better sourced from the few hardware...

    I'm F'in done with SSR's

This is an SCR, not an SSR, but Ive been using 2 of these for years with no issues ever. And I brew a lot! Both are wired to a 50A breaker, driving 5500 ULWD Camco's (I do back to back 10gal batches on brewday so needed 2 keggles). For 18 bucks you might want to keep one on hand for a...

    I'm F'in done with SSR's

If you run off the relay as suggested make sure your relay can handle 23A for them Camco elements at full tits or you'll create new headaches for yourself.

Control Panel help. Dual voltage RIMS panel with PWM.

Remember at half the voltage youre at 1/4 the power. You might not be happy with your 5500W Camco putting out 1375W. Id try it first before putting time and money into the build.

Flaked Oats or Flaked Wheat in NE DIPA?

+1 on oats for the creamy smooth mouthfeel I like wheat also, seems to add a 'fruit' character. I use it in lots of beers. Does the same to bourbons, wheated bourbons are fruity to me where rye bourbons are more floral and spicy. Same characters in beer, just buried deeper.

    Possible Stupid Question

Temp does impact fermentation time, altho the majority of the fermentation might take place in the first 3 days at 68 (depending on yeast selection) and take twice as long, 6 days at 63 so if you go 2 weeks primary, and 2 weeks secondary you wont notice the difference. What you should be...

What came in the mail for you today?

36 feet of EJ PVC free silver lined antimicrobial beer line. To replace all my lines AGAIN for the second time in 2 weeks. I replaced my lines a couple weeks ago and put in some standard beer line, and must have got a bad batch of cheap crap cause its leaching into my beer and making my...

    Apple grinding question?

You don't need to core them. If you have mushy spots cut that off or you risk acetobacter (vinegar) spoiling the cider. I do 1500lbs of apples a year, will post up the grinder and press I built soon. I wash them a bucket full at a time shaking it with a hose sprating in, clean off mushy...

    Bottle Labels

Beer labelizer makes nice labels. Get a pack of laminating sheets. Iron on the top side only thru a T-shirt. A dab of Elmer's on back glue s them to bottles perfectly.
