My beer gives me bad gas!

After reading the "math" on the amount of alcohol I must say that I am impressed by myself! Eight or nine beers was over a long period of time too... at least a good three and half hours... :tank: Seriously though, I like to drink. I try to leave out all of the dregs from the bottom of the...

My beer gives me bad gas!

I am just going to be frank with the discussion of my bowel ailments so be forewarned. We are all adults here, right? I have a 10% Imperial Stout that when I drink it I get a lot of gas later the same night and the next day and when I have had a lot (8 or 9 bottles... don't judge me!:cross:)...

Strong Stout didn't carbonate much... why?

I used approximately 2/3 (heeping) DME as priming sugar, boiled it in water and put in bottling bucket prior to beer and it was in a closet that is around 65F. Since my initial post I have had a few more and I found one that was way over carbonated. It was a bottle with the hinged flip top lid...

Strong Stout didn't carbonate much... why?

I brewed up a strong, 10%, stout. It turned out great flavor wise but the the bottles didn't carbonate very well. I used two yeast vials so the fermentation seemed to go fine and I used the standard (5 oz ?) amount of sucrose. Do stronger beers usually require more sugar to feed the yeast in...

    Forgot to refrigerate yeast!

I have 2 vials of liquid yeast I got yesterday from the LHBS and I forgot to refrigerate them! I am planning on brewing today, so it would have been out of the fridge for 24 hours. I am brewing a high alcohol stout, about 10%. I also have a pack of yeast nutrition powder called "Super Ferment"...

    Ever had bottle problems?

Thanks for all the replies! I don't think I'll worry about re-using bottles.

    Ever had bottle problems?

I've read that most commercial bottles you get when you buy beer are cheaper and thinner, meant for single use. I have been using pop top bottles from beer I have bought but was wondering if they might eventually be a problem. Has anyone had any difficulty reusing commercial bottles. By the...

Just for Fun - Pics of My First IPA

It was a little high! I struggled with trying to keep it cool. It turned out okay but I would like to try it again at lower temps to compare.

Just for Fun - Pics of My First IPA

I made an IPA with a recipe from my LHBS called Simtra (Simcoe and Citra hops). It turned out rad, I am now 2 for 2 with successful brews.

    Electric Stove Preferences?

I am replacing my electric range in the near future. Does anyone have an opinion on the coil stove top vs. the smooth surface for boiling wort? I would like a propane burner in the future but lets ignore that for now. I have a coil currently and I am not that impressed. I have seen the smooth...

Quick! Any tips on dry hopping in a glass carboy??

Thanks for all the tips guys. I am anxious to see how easy/hard it is to get all of the loose hops out of the carboy when this is done. I'll try and post again when it is over!

Quick! Any tips on dry hopping in a glass carboy??

I am racking my IPA into the secondary fermenter, a 5 gal. glass carboy. I was going to put the whole-hops in muslin bags but it seems like it may be a bit of a shove to get it in/out. Is it possible to put in in loose? Can I bottle it with it loose in the carboy? I mean will it get in the...

Any tips for a wort that may not have been cool enough?

Now that a little time has passed I will be a little more patient about how long the wort sits. I was thinking that it would be bad to sit for too long but I can think rationally now that why not add more ice/let sit longer/etc. and get to the optimum temp. What is this "no chill" method...

Any tips for a wort that may not have been cool enough?

Yeast was pitched and the best I can guess on the temp was upper 70's low 80's :o

Any tips for a wort that may not have been cool enough?

 I just finished an IPA and when I poured the wort into the glass carboy I don't think it had been cooled enough! Dammit! I don't think I used enough ice in the bath and I thought it would be better to just go ahead and pour it rather than let it sit at room temp. I put it below an...

    Whole hops and muslin bags

Thank you, that sounds like good advice.

    Whole hops and muslin bags

I am going over my checklist for my next brew day (my second brew ever), an IPA recipe named Simtra I got from my LHBS and I was wondering about using whole hops and muslin bags. I opted not to buy a strainer yet so when boiling the wort I am going to add the hops (Simco and Citra) at each...
