Corny Keg for Small Batch Fermentation?

I ferment exclusively in 5g corny kegs. I use an auto siphon to move to the serving keg so I handle the trub that way. I choose to ferment in kegs since I can fit two of them in my fermentation chamber, and I like stainless over plastic. You can bend or cut the pickup tube to sit higher off...

    High Gravity Custom eBIAB System

I guess the concern is that a 152 mash would actually be 129 (assuming sea level).

15 Gallon BrewBuilt Kettle Pickup Tube abd Boilcoil Question

By "angled" I meant the positioning of the tube opening was at an angle and not perpendicular to the kettle bottom. Excuse my crude drawings but would the first image (how I have it) have worse flow rate than the second image?

    Full Volume BIAB affect efficiency?

I use a big wire whisk for when I dough in and stir. Cuts right through any dough balls.

15 Gallon BrewBuilt Kettle Pickup Tube abd Boilcoil Question

Looks good. Love mine. Do you have yours literally touching the bottom of the kettle (angled of course)? Curious if I'd have better recirculation flow rate if it weren't. Seems like it may be restricted somewhat.

    High Gravity Custom eBIAB System

I did. My Wilserbag is too small (only works with the basket). The stock bag worked but I will probably get a new Wilser.

This worked quite well. No issues with the bag on the element or the recirculation throughput.

    High Gravity Custom eBIAB System

Going this route tomorrow. I bought a false bottom from Brew Hardware but by the end of the boil only 1/3 to 1/2 of the coils of my wort chiller will be submerged. And the false bottom is such a tight fit with the boil coil that I can’t easily remove it after the mash. I can play with my dead...

Bottle from Keg. Drink within a day.

I never purge the bottles and they are fine for a few weeks (never kept much longer than that). I use a length of hose to the bottom of bottle, fill to top then slowly remove and cap on foam. Not much O2 remains.

    Dry Hop - Bad Experience

What was the batch size? 15 grams isn't much for a 5 gallon batch. I just dry hopped with about 70 grams last night. You will definitely lose some volume to the hops, not sure about reusing the yeast though. Hopefully others will have some insight into that.

15 Gallon BrewBuilt Kettle Pickup Tube abd Boilcoil Question

I meant to update this thread, I did go for the piece that Bobby linked to above. Works great!

how much water to use, plus recipe help

Yeah definitely don't guess on the boil off. Run a test. With a 2.5 gallon batch size, being off on the boil off rate will have a big impact. It will also give you an idea of how long it takes to get to mash and boil temp. Which is handy for planning your brew day.

    High Gravity Custom eBIAB System

Initially, on the kettle only, I used PBW and scrubbed then passivated with a star san soak and left to air dry. Then I did the same with the basket after the initial brew day fail. I've never used TSP on my stainless, always had good luck with just PBW and elbow grease. Likely just that...

    High Gravity Custom eBIAB System

So rookie mistake. I did a PBW cycle of the recommended amount at 160° for about 45 minutes. Had it filled up to about 12 of the 15 gallons. Ran several boil tests, etc. BUT I didn't do it with the basket in! So first brewday yesterday was scrapped when I pulled the basket after the mash and...

Show us your electric brewing rig

It is set right above the boilcoil. I use a steamer basket that I line with the bag. So it sits right above the probe and prevents the bag from catching it.

    High Gravity Custom eBIAB System

It's this one here. I had to mount the controller onto a piece of wood so I could attach it to the VESA mounts. Would have been great if I could attach it directly but it's works well.

    High Gravity Custom eBIAB System

The whirlpool arm was a last minute consideration, but the system shipped without a pickup tube. When I asked HG they said they would get back to me. That was about 10 days ago so I just pulled the trigger with BrewHardware. EDIT: It's actually sort of odd to ship this system without a pickup...
