    Do bottle caps go bad?

Pitching past White Labs 'best buy' date.

How big a starter? Nutes? Given clean enough procedures, I don't think a vial at 10%, or even .01% could ever be lost completely.

    Caustics

Thanks for the good info and advice everyone! I am usually very safe around chemicals but I know accidents happen and well.. from matt's post they are not the tingly fun kinds. Dstar- are you saying NaOH doesnt have the same cleaner power as pbw? A little more digging suggests Tsp+oxcylean to...

    Why extract?

Extract beers win awards every year at homebrew competitions, and I'm pretty sure there's a few craft breweries who just use extract in their beers. I always have around 6#s of dme/lme available for starters, bottling, gravity adjustments during brewing, and maybe for that occasional extract...

    Caustics

I was wondering if potassium or sodium hydroxide has any applications in cleaning of homebrew equipment. I am aware it can etch glass and melt plastic, but even in weaker solutions it still possesses an ability to break down organic material. (at least from my previous experiences in lab) I've...

what do you use to take gravity samples?

whats the point to it? heating and cooling thin glass is usually not good juju. and your just sanitizing by boiling, which you could've effectively done with some starsan, iodine, alcohol, etc. I don't think I've ever sanitized my hydrometer... the sample just never needs to go back.

    Uses For Spent Grains

Well gravity usually depends on the beer. But I'm lucky if i get 75% efficiency, so theres probably still alot of good stuff left. My initial test results seem very promising... maybe not as fast as other grains but still pretty darn good since I also made a beer with alot of the converted...

    Uses For Spent Grains

just check on my petri and wow the 5 year old culture was definitely still alive!! Would no-sparge grains be the best to use for cultivation because of the higher levels of sugars compared to fully sparged, flavorless grain? Should I start with a smaller grain such as millet then inoculate...

    p. columbinus on agar/cold break mix

Yeah I realized later on the myc doesn't have access to the cold break proteins. Next time i'll decant the clear wort off for cultures.

    Bottles wont carbonate

Could be the caps/capper. Try to twist the crimped cap on the bottle with your hand. It shouldn't move. Also make sure you stir the priming sugar into the bottling bucket although I would've expected some foamers if you didn't evenly distribute the sugar. Look into a buying a scale so you can...

What is the best way to control fermentation temps?

I used to throw my carboy in a large ice tub and fill it partially with water. The t-shirt covering the carboy would wick up some water so adding a fan helped bring the temps down to a level very suitable for ales (i think it was 65ish) Now I have a chest freezer from costco with an analogue...
