    Well, that was interesting!

My first fermentation explosion. Sixth brew now, a German wheat beer kit from Brewer's Best. Went with 6 gallons instead of the 5.5 I usually put in the 6.5 gallon brew bucket. Added an extra pound of DME, and also two tsp of gypsum to bring the hardness up from the 25 ppm total hardness of my...

What's your occupation: Engineer or Non-Engineer

Ugh. How many engineers can dance on the head of a pin? Who cares, as long as all those engineers can obsess about who has what credentials. :o I'm just gonna keep brewing. Who cares about all that other shyte?

What's your occupation: Engineer or Non-Engineer

Oh God, nearly 40 percent engineers. No wonder there's so little sense of humor here. You know I meant that in the nicest possible way. :D :D :D

    Perfect Pour

I've never gotten that deeply into what makes a perfect pour. Who knows how many cans/bottles/kegs of beer I've poured into glasses over the years? And protecting a beer from oxygen? No beer I pour into a glass takes more than 15 minutes to go down my throat. Hmmm, I think that's tonight's...

"So and so" is a beer connoisseur

A "connoisseur" has expertise and passion. An "aficionado" better describes most so-called connoisseurs these days, if you want a fancier word than "fan." All an aficionado needs is passion.

It's about that time of beer!

Well, we were thrifty (that means stupid) and garage saled 2 propane burner deep-fryer turkey setups this summer, before I decided to get into brewing. Now brewing on the burner of our propane grill in the garage. So a turkey fryer is going on the Christmas list.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Almost true. Fella needs to keep tabs on when the Packers kick off, and that requires a clock. :D I did make a change this time. Our water is so soft (about 20-25 PPM total hardness) that I added 1.5 tsp of gypsum to the boil this time. Could be that jump started the fermentation.

What percentage of your beer is homebrew?

Just brewed my third 5-gallon batch. First batch is bottled and being consumed. Next batch won't be ready for a couple more weeks. At this point, I'd say about 10 percent of the beer I drink is home brew. I can get that percentage up by (A) brewing more home brew, (B) drinking less commercial...

I like girls who drink beer

Considering the title of the blog, he's woefully weak on pictures of gals drinking beer. As a photographer, I'd be happy to come down to Chicago and have some free brew with a bevy of sexy women and remedy the photo situation. I know it would be a great sacrifice on my part, but that's just how...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Third brew yesterday afternoon. First one that used unhopped LME, so required the full boil with finishing hops. Fun time brewing in the garage with the heater going. Looks like an all-grain recipe for whatever my next brew will be. Woke up this morning to the Cream ale at 68 F and bubbling...

I like girls who drink beer

WooooHooooo!! Mike and Ike, they think alike! She can have my stout any time. :mug: Must be a Packers thing. As for country music, Kenny Lee Puckett would have said it this way: Ain't but one thing I don't do about your country music, and that is care. Signed, PackersfaninMinnesota. :D

Increasing hops duration and boosting ABV?

Thanks, all. I brewed it as to specs because I started and finished before I came back in here to look at the last few replies, but did add a pound of cane sugar on the spur of the moment. Guess we'll see how it goes. :)

Increasing hops duration and boosting ABV?

Thanks! :) There is already a pound of corn sugar in the kit. It's 3.3 lbs of LME, 2 lbs of DME and 1 lb of corn sugar. Total of just a bit more than 6 lbs of fermentables for a 5-gallon batch. I could drive to get some more extra light DME, but my nearest LHBS is an hour away, and it's not...

Increasing hops duration and boosting ABV?

Doing a Brewer's Best American cream ale today. It's a combo LME/DME kit with separate hops pellets. It's basically just an ale version of the American lager style, so it'll be light. The yeast is Nottingham, the hops Willamette. The hops are in two packages, each one ounce. It's a 60-minute...

What pocket knife for brew day?

I've got a Buck 337BKS Paradigm Pro that goes everywhere with me. Scissors, on the other hand, I don't carry around on a daily basis. ;)

    Just drank my first

Sweet! :D Well, I like it, my wife loves it (she's a Killian's fan) and my best bud, who never could successfully pull off a home brew, loves it as well. And no, they are not just saying that to make me feel better. Neither one gives a shyte about making me feel better, but both are into beer. :)

    Brewing outside??

My first two kits were hopped LMEs. Earlier in fall I boiled my water on the burner of the propane grill outside next to the garage, and did all the combining, cooling and pitching in the garage, then brought the wort in the house to ferment. Was colder outside with the second batch, so brought...

Next one's just bottled today. :D Third one is waiting in the wings to be brewed.
