Buy your copper cooling coil now!

Copper prices are up from $3.75/lb to $4.25/lb in the past 30 days alone. Inventories are way down due to a supply shortage. Nickle is also spiking. While I'm mostly just mentioning it because I found it interesting, I do think you'll see the price of copper tubing going up significantly (like...

    Hanna Checker for water analysis

Has anyone tried the Hanna Checker devices for their water analysis. Looks like it uses colorimetric measurements to give 'fool-proof' measurements of things like Alkalinity, Phosphates, Chlorine and Iron. At $50 for each tester, it doesn't look half-bad if you need to test your water regularly.

Attaching whirlpool tube to inner side of half-coupling

I have a Polar 14 gallon SS boil kettle. Polar did a great job welding on the out fitting and a single half-coupling for the thermometer. But that half-coupling is a problem. I was hoping to avoid putting another hole in the kettle when I install my whirlpool system. The best way to do that is...

    Tips for coiling stainless

My buddies are coming over tomorrow and we are creating the HLT heat exchanger from 0.020" wall thickness 1/2" stainless steel. I've searched and seen threads talking about how hard it is to do, but no tips on doing it well. My plan is to lay the tube on the ground and place my 12" aluminum...

    $35 Ranco Substitute?

I think I might have wasted $65 today on a Ranco for my fermentation chamber. I think I could have used this $35 unit instead of paying $100 for the Ranco. I was looking for a more affordable heating solution on Amazon and came across this $35 temperature controlled outlet. It's got a digital...

    Oyster Beer...really?

Seems like Flying Fish Brewery is making an oyster beer with oysters in the batch. Am I just a sucker, or is this for real? Oysters? I love'em and all, I even have an annual huge oyster roast on New Years Day. But Oyster Beer? I really can't imagine a more unappealing sounding beer.

    Belgian Quad

I've a Belgian Quad I put into Primary 13 days ago. Day 1 It went in at about 1.058 Added triple stepped-up WL575 (just the yeast cake, discarded wort) Pitched at 65F Day 4 Added DME and sugars in boiled water to get to 1.109 Blew the top off of the carboy, put foam on the ceiling...huge...

    First Batch Sampled

My first batch finished burping this weekend, so I took a sample this evening. It's been fermenting 12 days and has been in secondary for about seven days. I'd say it tastes like warm, flat, hoppy ale. I suppose that's what it supposed to taste like. I'm just glad there are no noticeable off...

Fix the mix...Adjunct accidently mixed with main mash.

Need some help here. I went to my LHBS with a grain bill for a Wit. I thought it was pretty obvious that it was a adjunct brew recipe, and even commented that this would be my first try. I was browsing the pretty toys in the shop while the guy went in back to get my grains. He brought out a big...

First Batch - Is this "normal" or "contamination"?

My first batch has been in the primary for 9 hours. I pitched at 78F with Whitelabs 550 (Belgian Ale Yeast) that had been in a DME starter for ~20 hours. The Primary temp has dropped to 70F (which is about my target). I'm surprised to see so much activity on the surface of my Primary already...

First Batch in Primary, thought I'd join HBT :)

I just put my first batch into Primary today. It's a pretty straight-forward Belgian Ale that should do okay in this blasted heat. Everything didn't go perfectly, but hey, that's what it's all about. It's taking a shower now, or at least a little bath in the shower trying to keep the temp down...
