Were you stirring while heating? The guys at my LHBS had a BIAB demo day. Their bag had done a hundred batches without any false bottom and it looked perfect. Their rule was if you are heating you are stirring, while the bag is in the pot.

My build in progress. I decided to put in a breaker for the supply, and a contactor for the cooling side. I don't know if I trust the cooling relay with the starting current of our 50yo fridge. I have also put in illuminated switches for supply, cooling and heating. Just because.

You can do that. It's just a little neater and safer to have it in a box. It will still work just as well though. Cheaper too.

+1 to eBay temperature controller. That's the cheapest and it works. I have one. Additionally I have an eBay temperature controller that works in series with the power point for my brew belt. Both are great.

Boil the BE2 with maybe 2 or 3 litres if water for about 15 minutes to sanitise it. Put you can in some warm water to make it more viscous. Then open the can and mix it in. After that just tip it into your fermenter and top it up with as much water as you need. Easy.
