How I improved my brews and brewdays

Hey guys, I've started a new blog and I just put a new post up. http://mindfulbrewing.com/impoved-brews-and-brewdays/ I'd love to get any feedback that you guys have to offer or would love to know what you found the most useful or beneficial. Special thanks to BierMuncher for feedback...

SQ14 vs. brew specific burners (Blichmann or other)

Just curious if anyone has recently (or remembers from a while ago) upgraded from one of the Bayou SQ14 or similar burners to either the Blichmann burner or the Edelmetall burner from NB. I'm fairly happy with my SQ14 for the 14 gallon boils I do from time to time, but I'd also be interested in...

What other hobbies are you guys into?

What other kind of hobbies do you guys have? Me? I'm into grilling/smoking meats, baseball (mostly spectating!), football (ditto), and tuba playing. I'm only somewhat good at a few of those. The football and baseball watching - I am a master of those. Any other types of crafts that you...

What do you wish you did from day one?

What is one part of the brewing process that you wish you did from day one? For me, I wish I cared more intensely about temperature control during fermentation and yeast pitching rates (or really, just overpitching each time when possible). What about you guys?

    Drying your own orange peel?

Anyone have any ideas how one would go about drying your own orange peel/zest for future use? I know fresh is best if you want a particular orange, but not of them are always in season. For example, I LOVE blood oranges, but they have a finite season. I'd love to preserve their zest and essence...

    Grain not crushed enough?

I've just ordered my first batch from Midwest, and I have some concerns about the crush. Anyone had issues with crush from them? I've attached a picture of the grain (from my iphone, not that great, but may get the point across) but to me it seems like the base malt (maris otter) is not crushed...

    Wells Bombardier clone attempt

Let me know what you guys think about this recipe. I've toned down the chocolate malt and upped the grain bill by 10% or so to account for some efficiency issues (that I THINK might be related to my LHBS grain and not me...). This can be slightly out of style and little higher than usual gravity...

    Sparge SLOWLY!

I hope this will benefit someone. I was getting abysmal efficiencies (sub 60%) which I have fully attributed to sparging too quickly. How quickly is too quickly? Without getting volumetric, if you can see the water level going down, it's probably sparging too quickly. I recently brewed a 10...

Post-mortem blood orange hefe and plans for next

So I'm trying to adapt the blood orange hefe recipe in Calagione's Extreme Brewing to all-grain. For a 10 gallon batch, I'm using 10 lbs or each German Pilsener malt and Mutons wheat and then the hop schedule he provides. I attempted this on Sunday and got a massively stuck sparge. No amount...

    Fill mash tun from bottom?

My first post. I've been reading for a week or two and extract brewing for a year or so and just did my third batch of AG brew. I'm still refining but I'm also a fresh mind ready to screw up... I mean.. try anything. Since I know it's a PITA to fill the MT by dumping water directly on the...
