    Aborted brew - post mortem

I had a plan .... My plan was to bottle my batch of stout, then start a batch of Hefewiezen (Austin Homebrew kit) in the soon to be vacated fermenter. I got the White labs pitchable tube out of the fridge this morning, so I would be ready to go this evening. However, towards the end of...

    Plastic Bucket Lifespan

I had heard that at some point plastic buckets and tubes start harboring bacteria and always impart off-flavors so they need to be replaced. Has anyone had experience with this, and how often do you find you need to replace your buckets and tubing?

    Krausen in the bottles?

I just bottled my third batch two days ago, and today I noticed that there appears to be Krausen forming in the bottles? FG was 1.16, according to the Kit it should have been 1.14, hadn't moved in a day so I figured close enough? The only other thing I would note is that the beer seemed...

2nd Batch, Hop Pellets, all that trub

Howdy, just put my 2nd batch into the fermenter :rockin: and pitched the yeast. :ban: I did a lousy job getting the trub out, I mean lousy. :o For some reason I figured my colander would strain out some of the trub. I was wrong. Whirlpooling didn't get much either. I racked out of the...

    YASQ (Yet another starter question)

I smacked my wyeast 1056 pack, and after a little less than a day it swelled up quite nicely. So I mixed up 500 ml water and 1/2 cup of DME, simmered it for 15 minutes, and waited for it to cool. I swirled, and shook for about a minute or so, I then sanitized the pack, opened it and dumped the...

    Plastic as a secondary

Is there any problem with using another plastic fermentor as your secondary? I assume not, but it seems like a rule that your secondary is a glass carboy. I'm guessing that is so you can watch it clear?

    So many Extracts

I decided to try a Pale Ale as my second brew. The recipie calls 6lbs of DME. I considering midwestsupplies online and quickly became overwhelmed by the choices of Malt Extract available. From previous posts, I gather I can substitute the cheaper LME at 1.2 to 1.0 of DME, but there is a lot...

Botteling - where to put the sanitized bottles

This is a noob question: Any advice for what to do with the bottles after they are washed, sanitized and waiting to be filled? I am going to be bottling tonight, and I am looking around my kitchen, and I don't think I can handle 60 bottles. I certainly can't store them all upside down so that...

    First fermented Hydrometer reading

Hello All, The brew went into the fermenter last Saturday, with a reading of between 1030 and 1040 (Didn't have the thermometer then :(). The Sunday and Monday morning were vigorous, with lot's of bubbles, and things have tapered off. My airlock was virtually still today so I decided to...

Preparing to Bottleing the first batch

When taking hydrometer readings and you are using a pail to ferment as opposed to a carboy, can you just drop the sanitized hydrometer into the pail to take a reading, or should you still take your readings in the case by siphoning some out?

Newbie - Am I going wrong already?

Hello all, I just got my first batch in the fermenter, and did a few things wrong and would like to get your opinion on what I'm in for. 1) I used Muntons English Bitter recipie and took the package's suggestion to use hopped spraymalt instead of sugar. The resulting wort was sweet but...
