The volume of the measuring cylinder I got with my first kit (back.. a couple of years ago, now) is something like a pint. I've found that the hydrometer really doesn't want to work unless the thing is nearly full (it just sinks to the bottom instead). I hate to blow through 3-4+ pints checking...
