    PID not auto-tuning

I just set up my Spike EHERMS system and began to auto-tune my HLT PID. The instructions say to heat the water to 150 and then begin the auto-tune process. I was distracted and the water hit 160, no big deal Im thinking. It is now over 7 hours later and the ATU light on the PID is still...

    Minnesota Single tier brew stand

I am selling my single tier, gas-fired stand to go electric. Built from slotted strut with 3 BG-14 burners mounted and 4 - 4" heavy duty casters. Size is 60"w X 15"d X 31"h. Never been fired. This thing is solid. I travel a fair bit so I could deliver most anywhere in MN and neighboring states

    Swing and a miss!

My son and I decided to brew another batch of a Vanilla Bourbon Porter that turned out really good and scored pretty decent at a recent contest. Things did not go as planned! The first adjustment I made was to the grain bill as our efficiency has typically been in the 65-68% range and we...

Wooden mash paddle soaked in PBW

I decided to do a deep cleaning of a few ball valves and other various small parts after my weekend brew session and found I also inadvertently left my wooden mash paddle soaking in a bucket of PBW. Any chance of the PBW leaching out into my next batch when stirring my mash? Though about just...

    Mis-handled yeast

I got in a hurry yesterday when I got home from the HBS and inadvertently threw my smack pack of Wyeast 1728 in the closet along with my grains and various other supplies. By the time I realized my screw up, it had spent 14 hours in the closet at 64 degrees before I could get it back into the...

    My New Toys!

Finally had the chance to use my new brew toys this weekend - Fast Ferment conical, STC-1000+ programmable temp controller and a new freezer that I bought from the uncle of a local brewery owner for only $50(hoping it will supply some good juju!). Can anyone offer some advice on drilling...

    Pre-boil gravity adjustments

How far off on your pre-boil gravity do you have to be before you worry about any adjustments - adding DME or diluting with water? 5 pts, 10pts? Also, if adding DME, is it best to add at the beginning of the boil, mid way through or near the end?

    Equipment storage during MN winter

I moved all my equipment into the garage to make room in an extra bedroom that we are renting to a friend of the family temporarily. My concern is if the nasty cold will affect my equipment such as the refractometer, scales thermometers, stir plate, etc. I brew in the garage, but do my...

    Yeast Nutrient

I am making a Russian Imperial Stout with an OG of 1.105 with a 2 L starter of WLP001. Ive been told that I should use yeast nutrient in the last 15 minutes of the boil and Ive never used it before. I thought yeast nutrient was to be used when making the starter. Thoughts?

    Starter size

Question I never considered until tonight. Making a 1.75l starter and I ended boiling down more than I expected to end up with 1.5l. Does the amount of liquid or amount of DME matter the most? Should I just top it off with tap H2O?

    Bottling my first lager!

I'm bottling my first lager and have a couple questions: 1-do I need to add more yeast, or will there be enough dormant cells to wake up and carbonate while conditioning at about 65-68 degrees? 2-can I bottle at 36 degrees, or do I need to bring back to room temp to bottle?

How do I improve my brews?

I've been extract brewing for a little over a year and am looking to step up the quality of my brews. Do I invest my $$ in building a fermentation chamber, or do I go all-grain? Looking for opinions on what will give me the best bang for my buck to improve the quality of my beer.
