    Upcoming mead and cider comp

Just an FYI for my fellow mazers. I'm on the mail list because I've entered before -

    Cleaning a 1/4 inch hose

My wine filter uses a 1/4" hose for a drip tube. Basically whatever spills over from the filter gets routed to a collection bottle on the floor. No pressure, just gravity flow. I have a fresh roll of tubing that I'd like to sanitize but I can't think of a way to force solution through the hose...

    Cidermaking resource

From The Beverage People. I have no connection with them other than being a customer and on their mailing list. FYI to my cider brethren - Cidermaker's Guidebook

How sweet do you like your mead to be?

This is a very subjective question, and that's really the point of it. Your response can be your personal choice, or what other people prefer, or whatever. If it depends on the type of mead or other factors, then please explain in the comments. You have a mead ready to bottle and it's sitting...

Can I fine on the gross lees?

My cyser is about done and I'm preparing to fine it with Super Kleer (Kieselsol/Chitosan). I added pectic enzyme up front for the apple pectin but there's honey haze that needs to be dealt with. This yeast I'm using is a poor flocculator and I'm going to lose a bunch racking off the gross lees...

    White Labs Purepitch

Does a Purepitch pouch have a packet inside that needs to be broken like WYeast smack packs, or do you just have to massage it a bit before pitching?

    The elusive stopper

I had a standard white 2-hole #6-1/2 stopper that mysteriously disappeared from my brew room. All I'm seeing online is black ones sold by lab supplies outfits. Is this a rare duck? I need a new one.

    Finishing hydrometer

I had a narrow range hydrometer that covered 0.990 to 1.020 and I broke it (delicate little buggers). Can't seem to find a new one. All I see online is one that only goes to 1.003. Google and Amazon suck, they show what they want you to see. Anybody have a link that works? TIA

    What's your mead taste like?

For those of you who make traditional mead, what do you experience when tasting it out of primary? Think clear mead, before oaking or sweetening. What are your expectations?

    Remote heating/cooling controllers

I'm looking for a temperature controller that will transmit via either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. I'm primarily interested in just monitoring temp, not necessarily setting it. I have a couple Inkbird's but they require me to go to the brew room and have a look-see. What's out there?

    Shipping a bottle of wine

I want to ship a 750 ml bottle of my mead cross-country from Connecticut to my sister in Alaska. I'm asking about shipping containers - is there a proper shipping container for this?

    A stalled ferment?

Posting a blog on my current project. It's a Tupelo traditional with Lalvin DV10, and it's not going quite as expected. I was shooting for 11-12% ABV, OG between 1.085 and 1.090. Mixed 4.3 gallons of water and 14 lbs. of honey, expecting 1.090. Ended up at 1.098 per the hydrometer, 1.096 per my...

    Sealing a bucket lid

I'm using a standard plastic bucket for primary and for the life of me I can't figure out how to snap the lid on. The bucket is on a cart so I can't put a knee on it. I've tried whacking the edge with a mallet and block of wood but I get one side down and the opposite side jumps up. Ummm... is...

    Need a carboy hoist

I'm a handicapped old man and lifting a 50 lb. fermenter is not possible for me. I need a way to lift a carboy so that I can remove it from the insulating jacket before cold crashing. My brew room is in an unfinished basement, so I have the option of attaching a simple hoist to the floor joists...

    broken corks

I recently bottled a couple gallons of mead and I'm experiencing corks breaking when they're removed. Standard natural cork, #8, installed with a floor corker. The corkscrew is the same I've used for years. What's going on here?

    S.G. Math - having a brain fart

This should be easy, but for some reason I'm struggling with it - Goal is 3 gallons of cyser at OG 1.090. I have 1.5 gallons of apple juice at 1.040. Watered down a bit from it's usual 1.050. I want the honey to contribute more than half of the sugar. So I need 1.5 gallons total of honey &...

    Expiration dates of chemicals

I've been going through my stock of chemicals and adjuncts in my wine room and wondering if they're still viable or not. I know that yeast has a definite expiration but I'm not sure of the other stuff. These are Scott Labs / Lallemand products. Still in sealed foil pouches, but a few years...

    Soaking stuff

I'm a winter brewer and the season is fast approaching. Haven't been active in 2-3 years and I'm kinda excited about getting started again. Paid a visit to my brew room and everything is covered in dust and old brew goo. So the plan is to fill my 6 gallon bucket and have a cleaning day. I'm...

Can a transfer pump be used for bottling?

Trying to eliminate a step in the bottling process. I have a Super Sucker transfer pump and I want to pump from a secondary fermenter through a cartridge filter and directly to bottles. I'm wondering if a bottle wand will be able to hold back the pressure without self destructing. Or maybe...

Have they improved the Tilt Hydrometer?

I have one of the original models of the Tilt hydro/thermometer and it doesn't really meet my needs. It's light enough that it floats on top of krausen/foam so the SG readings are worthless. I'm not interested in tracking trends, I need precise SG numbers to time nutrient additions for my meads...
