Estimating number of cells in a washed culture

So I'm making an imperial IPA this Sunday and was going to make my starter with some washed 1056 from a red rye I made about a month ago. I harvested the yeast using the procedure described in this forums stickie. It was my first time harvesting and the 4 pint jars have a nice slurry on the...

    CO2 guage question

So I'm just getting into kegging and picked up 2 reconditioned kegs. After I cleaned therm and replaced the seals,I pressure checked them. All seemed to be good and the tanks help pressure for 24 hours. What I noticed was the co2 guage on the tank had dropped about 5 psi over the day...

    FRF472 temperature question

So, I see a lot of talk about this model Igloo for keeper builds, but I can't find any info on the upper temperature range of this freezer when it is set in refrigerator mode. I would test mine, but it is being built out for now. I'm mostly wondering because I'm heading to the brew store this...

Prepping yeast for high gravity stout

So I'm making a 5 gallon bourbon aged stout this weekend with an estimated OG of 1.113. I have never made a beer this strong and have been doing a lot of reading on it and the last question mark I think I have is on how to properly get the yeast ready for this. My plan, after reading what a lot...

Help with a false bottom in Xtreme MLT

Hey everyone, so I have an unusual MLT in that I built a false bottom for my Coleman Xtreme that I use in conjunction with a 'sorta' dip tube. It makes more sense with the photos. Basically I use a SS mesh screen for strength (forget the specs, came from McMaster but it is fairly thick guage and...

Yeast is fermenting, but I may have done the starter wrong.

Hey everyone. So I made a 10 gallon batch of an IPA last weekend with an OG of 1.075. On the Wednesday before, I made a starter which consisted of 3/4 c. DME and 1L. of water, added a vial of WLP001 and let it go. On Friday, the day before I brewed, I made two batches of the same starter ratio...

    False bottom for cooler

Does this polypropylene mesh with hole sizes 3/32" (0.094") seem too small? It looks small but there should be plenty of holes to prevent a stuck sparge. I plan on supporting it over the bottom of the cooler with copper tubing and sealing any gaps on the side with food-grade silicone sealant.

    False bottom for Coleman 70qt

Got my hands on some perforated polypropylene sheet with 3/32" (0.094") holes. Want to use this as my false bottom for my MLT instead of a manifold. Any thoughts on this? I know I will have to support it above the bottom of the cooler, which I intend on doing with some stainless steel 'u'...
