Fixing to brew my first beer, got a question

Hmmm, honestly its too late to add alcohol content now. All you would really do is screw up your carbonation with too much to too little. Save it for next time would be my advice. Gedvondur

    Metallic/medicinal flavor. What went wrong?

What do you use for airlock water? If it is unsantized water, or even just plain water, you could have very well infected your beer with it. Most people either fill their airlocks with sanitizer or vodka. Personally, I use cheap vodka that won't harm the yeasties or damage the flavor of the...

    I hate LME!!!

I find this comment interesting, I use Briess DME all the time. I used to use Muntons, but switched over because of the cost of the imported Muntons DME and the fact that Briess is a local company for me. I haven't used Cooper's DME, so I can't comment on that. What I can say is that I have...

    A few questions??

I think that is one of those classic issues that cause all kinds of consternation between home brewers. Personally, I always use a secondary to clear. I like the results I get that way. That being said, a lot of people don't use secondaries and don't see a need. I say this to you: Try...

    A few questions??

You are lucky, I have to brew this so often, I have created a shopping list for it. Below are all the item numbers and quantity to order from Northern Brewer. #20153 Briess Pilsen DME (Dry Malt Extract) 3.0# #20143 Briess Wheat DME (Dry Malt Extract) 3.0#...

What do I need to make a Double CO2 regulator

I got my double regulator from http://www.micromatic.com/ They seem to make a quality, rebuildable regulator, and they sell double regulators as well. Very helpful on the phone, reasonable prices, excellent hand-adjustable and lockable knob on the front. And they are pretty. :-)...

    Briess or Muntons

My co-brewer and I have used both Muntons and Briess extensively. In beers we reproduce, we have been unable to detected any real flavor difference or difference in fermentability between Muntons and Briess. Briess itself is located in Chilton, Wisconsin, my neck of the woods. They...

    Pepper Beer

A brewing company in Milwaukee makes a pepper beer, but we are talking black pepper, not chillies. http://www.furthermorebeer.com/ourbeer.html The beer in question is Knot Stock. Disclaimer: I am not associated with Furthermore Beer. Gedvondur

    5 or 6 1/2 gallon for fermenting?

There isn't going to be any O2 anyway. The yeast will blow all of the oxygen out of the carboy regardless of 6.5 or 5 gallon. Co2 will form a layer on top of the beer as soon as the yeast begin. Gedvondur

Best and/or Worst Brewing Gadgets You've Ever Purchased

Lets see...... Two best purchases.....Auto Siphon and wort chiller. Best purchase avoided......Carboy wedge on Northern brewer. Little plastic pieces that you can stuff under the edge of your carboy to tilt it. Stupidest accessory I have ever seen. Gedvondur

    Bubbles from auto siphon

I use CIP Film, a light coating of it to prevent that from happening and to ease the removal of the hose from the cane. This also serves to stop the bubbles. Gedvondur

    Using Ginger

We just brewed the Shakemantle Ginger from either Clone Brews or Beer Captured, I don't remember which. I think it was Beer Captured. That recipe called for an once and a half at the boil and a half ounce in the secondary. I just got to try it, I thought it would be far too mild. As it...

    Laaglander

When I was searching for bulk DME, I ran across references to Laaglander and have seen it specified in the occasional recipe. However, I was never able to find anyone that even sold it anymore, let alone in bulk. I get the impression that the company is no longer in business, but I cannot...

Best all around base malt extract: NB Pale, Pilsen, or Gold?

We got bulk Briess Pilsen (Ex. Light) and Briess Golden Light (Light) for our long term purchases. I think if you forced me to pick, I would say the Pilsen. You can always use an adjunct to add color. Gedvondur

LME vs DME... either/or or Both

Interesting idea, but why would you do that? The cold water would knock you much more significantly off of boil creating a longer recovery time. Not criticizing, just curious. We just dump multiple lbs of DME into the boil pot (off the flame) and stir for a minute or two. The DME doesn't...

4 gallon boil, or all 5?

We were doing ours in the kitchen sink. Much less water mass. Interesting story, we found that having all that hot wort in the kettle and all that cold around it actually caused stress fractures in the rolled lip of our cheap-ass thin turkey fryer pot. It cracked in two places. Not a...

4 gallon boil, or all 5?

In the experimenting that has gone on during our brewing process, it has become clear that there is no real need to boil four or five gallons when dealing with a five gallon batch. Three and a half gallons seems to be ideal. Enough to get hop extraction but not so much that it takes forever to...

so how do you folks clean the OUTSIDE of a corny?

I use Bar Keeper's Friend, and lots of water. Really anything that can polish stainless steel will work. Just make sure it won't degrade the rubber handles if your corny has rubber handles. Gedvondur
