    Six String Pecan Porter (AG)

Did my first taster of this, and it is coming out really nice. You can just get a hint of the pecans at the end. I think in hindsight I might have up'ed it to 12 oz and toasted it even a bit more. Still a damn fine porter though!

    Ever Run Out of Gas?

I have six tanks, so I always have a couple with a little gas left! Between brewing, two bbq grills and a pop-up camper, there is usually a spare around somewhere! Remember your boy scout motto! Be prepared!

Disconnect if not going to be using for a while?

I disconnect usually to be safe. If the kegs are sealed well, you should still have some pressure in them when you get back.

Lower Effiency when mashing for high OG?

Part of it is you tend to have a higher water to grain ratio to promote recirculating, but that doesn't explain your cooler mash tun efficiency. Part of it for me is that I do a bit coarser of a grind in order to insure I don't get a stuck mash when recirculating. For me also, the mash out has...

If You Hate Drilling Through Stainless Steel Try This

I use exactly the same thing, only I typically use vegetable oil. My cheapo harbour freight bits work like a charm everytime!

Can Star San effect flavor when bottling?

    Starsan shouldn't affect the taste.

    Jaybird's Stainless False Bottoms

Here is a pic of mine installed; it's in a keggle MT. These are super high quality and you aren't going to find a better deal. Having them cover the whole bottom, to create more liquid space below, is the bomb for recirculating. Highly recommended from this satisfied customer!

    My Rig--thanks HBT!

It works wonderfully so far. I have done three batches on it so far including a porter, an ESB and a Rye PA. My efficiency is down a bit from the old ghetto system, but I mainly attribute that to grinding a bit coarser to make sure I don't get a stuck mash. Here is a grainy phone picture of the...

    5. PBW soak overnight But 1. and 3. would work just fine too :)

    My Rig--thanks HBT!

Yes, the ball valve at the MT is useless; you use the one at the pump outflow to control the rate of sparge water going in. If you look at the pic I put of the pump configuration, the valve on the top of the picture is controlling outflow.

    Star San Mixture Shelf Life

I think so, and I HATED that slimyness! It made everything look filthy. With the cleared starsan in distilled, everything looks clean and no slimy!

    Star San Mixture Shelf Life

I contacted the company directly about that. They said that it is good for a little while but won't be effective for prolonged periods. In other words, you have to use it right away and toss it. The surfactant comes out of solution due to the hard water. Here is the exact message I got from...

    My Rig--thanks HBT!

Well, yes actually. for one thing I put a ball valve on the wort return/sparging section up on the MT. That was pointless since you control the flow down at the pump and will build up pressure if you try to control the flow at the MT. I thought it would be easier since you are looking down into...

    My Rig--thanks HBT!

Automated with a PID is next on my list, but as you pointed out its going to require a bit more equipment, etc. since I am using gas and not electric. I am doing it manually right now. I primarily do single infusion with a mash out, but I do intend to do step mashing as well. You're definately...

Brewing this morning, need starter advice!

Well, if you can wait until tomorrow, then that might be your best option to crash the yeast. Otherwise, you could just poor off some of the liquid (and yes, some of the suspended yeast) to an acceptable volume then swirl it around and pitch it. It will probably be plenty.
