Ever actually had a home brewing dream?

I've lost track of how many years I've been home brewing but last night I had the first actual dream of home brewing. For some reason I added beans and taco meat to my mash. I'm not sure why but in the dream it seemed like a good idea. Then I was trying to figure out which hops from the...

    Yeast Starter

It will be just fine for making a starter. If you're worried about a flavor contribution you can always decant before pitching the yeast.

    Propagator Starter with Dextrose

I doubt you'll see much growth without a nitrogen source for the yeast to munch on.

    Brewing School

I toured UC Davis when my wife was getting accepted in to a Graduate program. I wished she would have picked Davis over Irvine. I really liked the community. There was a lot of agriculture in the immediate area and having grown up in a farming town it felt more like home. I actually had a...

What can I do with this?

I don't have it with me at work right now but this thing came from a large 50 cup percolator. It's about 9 to 10 inches across.

What can I do with this?

Yeah, it can spin on the tube but I'm not sure how one could make it spin on its own.

Storing collected wort over night with a PM

If you don't do a proper mashout and denature the enzymes then yes the taste will be altered because the enzymes may continue to function and make it a very dry beer. As far as spoilage goes, it shouldn't really be a problem left out. I've done overnight mashes and left wort out overnight...

    yeast energizer

I add it before the boil to sanitize it. Most yeast energizers and yeast nutrients are autolyzed yeast (dead yeast cells that have been treated in some manner to break the cell wall down exposing the nutrients stored inside). The boil won't hurt them at all.

What can I do with this?

I rescued this from a coffee percolator. It's stainless steel and has raised slots stamped in to the lid and the base and a stainless steel tube. I'm thinking that there's some way to incorporate this as a filter or manifold for all grain. Just looking for brainstorming ideas before my wife...

That's one of the things I love about brewing. It's only as complicated as you make it.

My first yeast slant, why does it have so low viscosity?

I find that I have to vary the amount of agar from batch to batch. I use actual beer wort at 1.030 rather than DME/LME. I've done a little experimenting with the use of acids and find that acid degrades the agar during pressure cooking. So depending on the acidity of my wort I can have...

    Shipping yeast - your thoughts?

A method I tried out on another board works pretty well and it's also what our yeast labs do. Granted you're not going to get a HBS to ship this way. You cut a half inch square from a piece of absorbant paper. The kind we use resembles construction paper. Fold it up in foil and autoclave...

    WTG-Stir plate set up

^Not part of any clubs. The one's I'd be interested in a just a little bit too far away. Maybe I'll leave it on the honor system. Brewers seem to have more integrity than most so I'm sure those who already have a set up will refrain. I'll repost in the general section and let those...

    WTG-Stir plate set up

Naw, too easy to set up a new account. A pass it on agreement might be a good idea. But I'll leave it up to the personal honor of the individual. Once out of my hands I really can't do much about it and over time we'll all forget about it anyway. These things have a way of propagating good...

    WTG-Stir plate set up

I need to reset my kharma or something. Anyway I'm going to give away a yeast culturing set up. I'll be honest, the stir plate has seen its better days. You have to slightly push in on the adjustment knob while you turn it but it works and is variable speed. Also throwing in a 2000 ml...
