    Brew Shed - Soliciting Feedback

I would change the size of the shed from 10X12 to a 12X12. Once it is built you are stuck with the size. The extra two feet will be used. Come over to my house and see my brew room and get a perspective of the size. I have the same suggestion about treating your waste as gray water and use...

    Polaris hop mess

I use Polaris in my APA's and IPA's. The first time I used it was in a single hop IPA to see what it can do. I have settled in on the following blend added at: FWH, 30, 20, 13, 7, and dry hop. Polaris: 25% Citra: 25% Simcoe: 25% Cascade: 25% The average runs about 13-13.5 AA. I love this...

Biodiesel filters to Increase Brewhouse Efficiency

They do fit together very closely. I have never tried to stack them. I have been afraid of a disaster. I have taught of trying it but have never done it. I am not sure which filter would plug first. It would depend on two factors. First how much hops were added to the boil and second how...

Biodiesel filters to Increase Brewhouse Efficiency

My boil kettle has a valve at the bottom. You will need two sanitized buckets. You filter through the 200 micron filter into the first bucket. Then you filter from the first bucket through the 75 micron filter into the second bucket. It help if the first bucket also has a valve. That is...

Biodiesel filters to Increase Brewhouse Efficiency

The 200 micron clogs up proportionally to the amount of hops that are in the boil. Generally you can get by with only one or two back flushes. The 75 micron takes out more of the hot and cold break and is useful to reduce chill haze. That is why I do not use the 75 micron filter for...

Amazon is the best source. They are cheap. I would recommend getting one 200 micron and one 75 micron filter.

"Hop Tea" method for adding aromatics

I am a firm believer that a great IPA is hopped at every opportunity possible. That means stating with a first wort hop addition and finishing with a hop tea priming and everything in between that includes dry hopping. Remember a great IPA has a a great hop depth that can satisfy all of your...

first batch in years - fermentation blew the airlock off

I always use a blow off tube for my entire primary fermentation period. I use an airlock in the secondary only. If you leave the blow off in place for the entire period of primary fermentation there is no risk of contamination. Think of a blow off tube as a very high capacity airlock.

Help I think I ruined my batch of red ale

What yeast did you pitch and how did you prepare the yeast? What was the wort pitching temperature? What temperature around the fermentor. Nothing you describe would cause any fermenting problems. It may cause some kettle carmelization, which is appropriate if you are making an Irish Red.

    Water saving wort chiller

Using a pump and recirculating cooling water through a bucket of ice water is inefficient until you get down to 100F to 120F depending on your tap water temperature. Use tap water for the first part of the cooling. Then switch to recirculating icewater with a pond pump. Fit your wort chiller...
