Not scale the yeast? uh oh... why? I made a 2.5 gal batch and used 2.5 grams of yeast... I thought I needed to halve the entire recipe...

Why not wine bottles? I was planning on using Grolsch bottles... glass with ceramic flip top lock down lid thingy... are they ok to use?

If it tastes really good I don't think I would worry about the bleach not being rinsed properly... I'm just a beginner though... maybe someone experienced could confirm.

did you taste your hydrometer reading?

My draught has only been in the Primary five days and the temperature had dropped to 66.2 the last two days which I thought might be a bit low for the yeast so I took a hydrometer sample to see if the bulk of fermenting had finished... it's reading 1010 (OG 1040) so I think it's going to be ok...

Hi, I know home brewing of spirits is not legal in America but we live in New Zealand where it is legal. My friend has bought a Vodka home brew kit and I was trying to find a spirits home brew forum for her to join... a google search has yielded nothing! Anybody know of a forum? Ta very...

Just took a smell of a few puffs coming from the airlock and it doesn't smell bad at all... eek.

haha yep... I know I'm hooked because I started my first brew six days ago and I already have 5 gallons of lager, 5 gallons of draught and 2.5 gallons of apfelwein brewing... haven't even bottled anything yet... lol

Thanks... I just wish I'd taken one so I could check I got the measurements right... I couldn't quite fit the entire 2.5 gallons of apple juice in, plus we have everything in litres and kgs not gallons and pounds so I had to use 450 grams of dextrose and it's very hard to get those measurements...

I put on a brew of Apfelwein (thanks Edwort) about 13 hours ago but I forgot to take an OG... Should I take one now? Or not bother? Also I had to use plain old "General Purpose Wine Yeast" as I couldn't get the one in Edwort's recipe. Edit: Oh, and it's a half size (2.5 gallon) brew...

I know! So cool for us in NZ. I don't like spirits much but my friend is going to brew her own... and I found a local club and they have monthly competitions for beer, wine and spirits... can't wait!

Don't you hate those time frames given in kits? My Coopers kits all say 4-7 days in the primary and two weeks in the bottle. That's all! Very misleading! :( Luckily I joined this forum before messing with the primaries so I will wait until at least two weeks before bottling and then leave...
