Washington Cask Beer Festival - Seattle 3/22

Had a great time as well!!! Great to meet you guys!!! I have to go over my notes as to what some favorites were, but off the top of my head, I definitely agree with Brewtopia's list, though I didn't get to try that one from Elysian! I also loved the Lost Abbey beers and Silver City's scotch...

Is this the way to do it?

Before I preheated my MLT first, my mash temp would vary widely across the grain bed and I had trouble hitting my exact temps. Once I started preheating the MLT it allowed everything equilibrate and I hit my mash temps exactly and uniformly across. Lots of people do it the other way, but if...

Washington Cask Beer Festival - Seattle 3/22

I just read the beer list again and I'm getting excited!! :mug: Let's meet up. I haven't been to this festival before so I don't know a good location, but maybe someone who has can recommend a good spot/time

Is this the way to do it?

If you're interested in saving water and time, you can preheat your cooler with your 3.5 gallons of strike water about 10-12 degrees higher than your strike temp, wait for the temperature to cool down to 167, then add your grains.

    In Honor of George

So sorry for your loss.... I will toast tonight in honor of George. At least he got to live a good portion of his life happy and in a loving home.

The stupidest comment on your beer

Most friends have generally had good things to say but they also have good taste in beer ;) However, the funniest thing a friend ever said was after she took a drink of my house Brown Ale and someone made her laugh so hard she had beer come out of her nose... as soon as she could breath...

    When to pitch yeast

Maybe this is wrong, but I like to pitch in the mid-60s as I ferment in the low-60s for ales.

    You All Suck!!!!!

Myself and HWMBO are looking at buying our first house this summer/fall. We won't consider unless it already has a shed (or has room on the property to build one) for our brewery. A big one. :D

    problems using temperature equations

He's doing a protein rest, which has a general range of 113-131degF. He would still be within range and remember, enzymes are not an "all-or-nothing" event, they are just the "optimal" ranges for activity. You are thinking of a single infusion mash. In that case, a few degrees can make a...

    problems using temperature equations

The main reason I switched to adding water first is that I found that the mash temps varied wildly all over the mashtun when I added water into it. How did I know what my true mash temp was? If you add the water first, it allows everything to equilibrate and come to the same temp throughout...

    problems using temperature equations

Do you add the water or the grains to your mash tun first? I used to have problems hitting my strike temps with grain first. Now I do something similar to WBC: I add my water to about 10-12deg F above my strike temp, let the mash tun equilibrate and allow the water temp to be even all over...

Hard Liver Barleywine Fest in Seattle

    Dry-Hemping

I've never understood that... when I first started out and was brewing extract in the kitchen, I *loved* the smell of malt and hops! Still do when I clean up in the kitchen... And to chime in, weed is best combined with beer when you have each in one hand :D
