Congrats again!!!! I am also fortunate enough to live like 2 miles from the location... can't wait to come check it out! Let me know - seriously - if you ever need a helping hand.

    Mushroom porter

I've thought about throwing King Boletes in a dark beer before. They are great for soup stocks and the like. I think they would impart a nice earthy flavor and would go well in some kind of porter. I have yet to try it though...

    spruce ale?

I think if you freeze them in an airtight bag they should be good... kind of like hops!

    How was everyone's brew day?

Awesome! How was the AG brewfest? I would have loved to have made it down! Alas, 4 feet of new snow was calling my name yesterday :P

Hey everyone. First timer here, looking for a good book.

I like "Designing Great Beers" by Ray Daniels. I still refer to it all the time! Welcome!

    How was everyone's brew day?

How was everyone's brew day this weekend? Mine went well for the most part. Efficiencies were as expected, though I didn't calculate my IBU's till the end of the boil like an idiot and I'm gonna be a little below what I had in mind (brewed an ESB). The alpha acid % was lower than I realized...

    spruce ale?

I haven't done one yet, but plan on collecting spruce tips this spring for an Alaskan Winter ale clone this fall. If you use spruce, use the spruce tips, which are the light green tips seen on the new spring growth. I looked around on the internet for awhile for a source of actual spruce tips...

The Lost Abbey - Devotion Ale

That was one of my favorites from the cask festival! That picture is making me thirsty :D

    Pre boil gravity matters?

Yeah I definitely cool it, but I still take the temp into account. I use a calculator at http://leebrewery.com/beermath.htm

    ESB - hops advice

Cool, thanks for all the advice! I know that Fuggles and NB are fine for the style (and even Williamette and Challenger), I just love the EKG and haven't read too many recipes without them. Even though the shortage might be a pain sometimes, it is forcing us all to get creative, eh? :)

    My SWMBO's blonde moments

I have lots of "blonde" moments and I am a natural blonde. Sh*t. Well, to clarify, I am more prone to clumsiness than air-head moments. I tend to walk into walls when I cut corners around doors, randomly spill/drop things, etc. Oh yeah HWMO's fave is when I bend over to get something off the...

    ESB - hops advice

I am looking to brew an ESB on Sunday and the only hops available for this style at my LHBS was Fuggles.... I was hoping to use EK Goldings (or any other Goldings, if needed) but alas there was none to be found. So I bought some Fuggles, and I also have Northern Brewer hops on hand. Any...

    Pre boil gravity matters?

Agreed with the others. Just remember to adjust your reading for temperature as that wort will be pretty hot.

    Too young to brew??

    I absolutely agree Yuri!!
