    Newbie Swamp Cooler ????

I am currently using a 6.5 gallon plastic fermenter bucket with one of those stick on thermometers. I have 4 or 5 different indoor/outdoor thermometers and before relying on anything, I set them all near each other and observed the variety of temperatures they showed so I had some idea of what...

    Never Again: Uneven Carbonation

My next brew is a AHS oatmeal stout and I plan to bottle it. I'll have some 12, 16 and 22 ounce bottles set aside for it. I did not get the priming sugar with the kit though, because I like to calculate and weigh out a proper amount on my own. I always let 1 or 2 inches of beer swirl into the...

    Newbie Swamp Cooler ????

Not really sure to be honest, but if you look at the very bottom of the page here, the board will link some threads it thinks are relevant (and usually are). The tub I'm using is only a 10 gallon one and I think the water level is only maybe half the wort level in the bucket. I just try to...

What is the deal with new bottle prices?

Thats how I did it: buy some 22 ouncers and some ez cap. Any others I can scrounge from the grocery store.

    Newbie Swamp Cooler ????

Did you leave it there for a number of hours to get those readings? Because the temp of the liquids is going to even out eventually I think. Fermenting beer though will create some of it's own heat, but I think if you can get it predictable, you are in as good shape as you can get. In mine...

    Advice on my first brew!

I used one of the typical nylon bags that you can find in all of the online and local stores I think. It has a drawstring, but you also need to tie it, or alot of the sludge escapes. With 1 oz of pellets in it, it rolled along nicely in the boil. For the second addition I used a small muslin bag...

    Weight vs. Volume

It's very very handy to have a nice kitchen digital scale. Easier to buy a bulk of corn sugar and weigh it based on priming sugar calculator and the specific batches characteristics. And when/if you end up bulk buying DME and hops etc, you'll sure need a scale. Resistance is futile! :tank:

What is the deal with new bottle prices?

Sam adams boston lager is a nice beer, and the bottles are perfect for the recapping. I have the same capper. I've only bought them in 6 packs for like 8 bucks plus bottle deposit, but thats because I walk and can't carry cases on foot. (thats one of the reasons I started brewing). Oh, and the...

First Brew - Can I add more water to bottling bucket?

The 5 gallon mark on my buckets is about half a gallon short of the real 5 US gallon mark anyway. I'd bottle as normal, and count up how many ounces you actually get. Then measure it out (using known 1 gallon container) and mark it for next time. I had to do that too. I got a strong 4.6 gallons...

Should I follow the directions?(Cooper Kit)

I've done a few coopers kits. I recommend trying to keep the temp even cooler, as it just comes out better for me. Coopers kit instructions are for 6 US gallons, and the coopers fermenter is 7.9 gallons. So if your fermenter is a smaller 6.5 gallon one, I'd recommend only mixing it up to 5...

    Quick, Original Gravity.

Right before you pitch the yeast, yeah you could do it that way. An impeccably cleaned and sanitized hydrometer right in there so you can read it and snatch it back out should be totally cool.

Prices off at my LHB? Don't seem to be much savings DIY recipes???

I figured it out for what I was actually paying per ounce (from my grocery receipts over a few months time) so I knew what I was shooting for from the outset. 7.6 cents an ounce. I can make 6 gallons of a Coopers beer for 3.4 cents an ounce or so, which is just as good. Or of course a much...

Going to be brewing my #1 this afternoon!

Is it just going to be the can of coopers hopped extract plus the DME? I'd use it all in the brew and prime with corn sugar. There's some online calculators for priming, here is one: http://kotmf.com/tools/prime.php Enter in the relevant info and it gives options for priming.

    First AG. a failed success

    I'm drinking an ale that was all US Saaz 1 @ 60, .5 @ 15 and .5 @ 5 and it's really good, for what it's worth.

I forgot to buy a muslin bag. Places to buy one?

Take the lady out of the pantyhose first though. :tank:

Where do you get your gear??

If you plan well and write things down that you need and want to have, then shop for a nice flat rate or free shipping deal, you can save more. Better to get 20 items at $8 shipping, than the same 20 items in 2 shipments at $15 each, right? Good luck!

    First bottling session

I just give it a whole evening because I also will do 100% of the cleaning up afterward too. Definitely time for a couple of cold ones during the process.

    HELP. flavorless kit brew.

If it actually did come out bland and flavorless after conditioning, you could try making some "hop water". Basically just a short small boil with some hops tossed in and stored in a water bottle and added in a small amount to a bland beer. I saw this video on youtube by steeljan where she does...

    Trying to help a friend...

Yeah, that sure looks like beer. :) The smell and taste were awkward? Maybe he just means normal green beer and doesn't realize it?

    First boil over - #!@#!!

Since I have 3 awesome spray bottles.. I decided to keep 1 for misting water during boils. My electric stove can just barely bring 3.5 gallons to a rolling boil, but you never know I guess!
