    Janet's Brown Ale (Partial Grain)

So I just brewed this beer and took the first gravity reading for it and tasted it and it's so delicious as it is I don't know if I even want to dry hop it at this point. For those of you who have brewed it, what do you think about skipping the dry hop and making it more of a regular brown ale?

1st brew has a chemical taste... any ideas?

Has the taste faded at all compared to bottling time and now? I'd think after 4 weeks in the bottle hopefully you'd see at least a little reduction in any green flavors but they wouldn't necessarily go away completely. It took my first batch a few months before the green flavor went away (but of...

How to siphon from a 1/2 gal growler?

Okay thanks. I'll probably just try the autosiphon since I have a lot of trub I want to avoid.

How to siphon from a 1/2 gal growler?

So I decided to do some experimenting and use two growlers I had lying around so I wouldn't tie up a full carboy. It looks like it's about ready but now I'm wondering how to actually get the liquid out of the growler so I figured I'd bring the question to HBT. So do you just use an autosiphon...

The last bottle is the best bottle

I've seen it mentioned in the forums a number of times and you guys are right, the last few bottles of your homebrew are sadly the best. I just had the second-to-last bottle of my very first batch (partial grain altbier kit) and it wasn't until that bottle that I really identified what "green"...

    Cider with Champagne Yeast

I agree that you should wait until the cider has cleared. Now are you making Ed's apfelwein and just substituting the yeast or are you making regular cider (ie. did you add the 2 lbs of sugar?) The reason I ask is that I made a batch of cider with only a little brown sugar (1/2lb) added and with...

drinking beer straight from the fermenter

I'm a newbie with just two batches under my belt. When I started my first batch I just asked guys at work if they would help out and save any pop-top beer bottles they had. One guy in particular was having a party the next weekend and brought in a full case of empties the next week. That plus...

A good day for a 1st batch newbie is...

Thanks, yeah I was just shooting for "not infected," "not disgusting," or even "drinkable" but it ended up being something even SWMBO likes. I still have a long way to go and a lot to learn.

A good day for a 1st batch newbie is...

It was an Altbier kit from my LHBS (thebeveragepeople.com). It was an extract kit but it included some grain as well. Who knows how it would have turned out without HBT though. I probably would have just popped it from primary to secondary to the bottle far too quickly. At least now I have a...

A good day for a 1st batch newbie is...

When you bring a six pack of your first home brew to work for people to take home and try and get an email later in the evening from a coworker (who also brews): "Dude! That's *&$#ing awesome beer!" :D :D :D

    Fermentation in crawl space?

Okay that all makes sense. I suppose it's better to just have a more controlled environment inside or in a garage than risk the crawl space. Thanks for all the feedback.

    Fermentation in crawl space?

This is an unfinished crawl space under the house. Not directly on dirt but not far from it--there's a plastic sheet over the dirt. That, I suppose, is my concern. There's shelter from the elements but I'm sure there are spiders, etc. under there.

    Fermentation in crawl space?

Okay so I have one batch under my belt and some apfelwein in a secondary so I'm about ready to start up a new batch. It's starting to get hot here in Northern California and a lot of the houses here (mine included) don't have AC. Today it's 80F inside the house and while I have a cool corner in...

Do you ever top off @ the secondary?

From what I've been reading in the forums here I expect most people have their initial boil down so that they have more or less the amount of wort they want by the end, but a lot of kit instructions and even instructions in books recommend adding sanitized water after you rack to the secondary...

    Bottle Carbonation Equipment?

Okay so I'm yet another newbie to home brewing. Between helping more experienced friends brew, books and instruction from my LHBS, and all of the tips in this forum I feel like I have a decent handle on brewing at the beginner level, at least. It seems that most people either fall into the...
