    some quastions before brewing!

Just my two cents.... I stay away from aluminum, there are arguments against it (it leeches into the beer). No one has ever had a problem with stainless steel. The bigger the pot the easier it is to brew. Most extract kit recipes I've brewed boil 10L at a time so you may need a bigger...

    Areas to improve..

I think the yeast definately. I use white labs or wyeast, dry just doesn't compair to me especially if you ever make a belgian style beer. A yeast starter is important for better flavor so I've learned. With ale I usually ferment at 65 degrees in my basement, seems fine. I store bottles...

    Couple Questions on Bottling

I use the original caps from the soda bottle, just sanitize everything well and only fill the soda bottles 3/4 of the way full, leave a little head space. Most of the time i'll fill 20 regular 12oz bottles and put the rest of the batch in 2 liter soda bottles, that way I can sample my beer as...

    When to add additives

I add 5.2 stabiliser to my mash water right before i add the grain. I've only ever seen campden tablets used to steralize wine must, I believe it'll kill your yeast. Gypsum will harden the water, i assume it's to mash with but i've never used it.

    Couple Questions on Bottling

Clean 2 liter soda bottles are pretty easy too. You'll still need a bucket, wand and tubing. Sanitize everything and don't forget the priming sugar. The real easy way is to buy corny kegs and put your homebrew on draft...

    Anyone ever use beer calculus?

I use it all the time. I have not paid for brewing software yet but whenever I want to play around with a recipe I go to beer calculus. I combine it with brew365 water calculator, and tastybrew water infusions calculator to gather all the data I need for an AG recipe. I will even take a screen...

Multi-pressure requlator or a Distribution bar (Opinions Please!)

Hey Everybody! I am changing my kegerator to handle corny kegs. I have four corny's, a 5lb CO2 tank, and a regulator. I was wondering what everyone's opinions was: Is having the option to set different pressures important enough to buy a multi-pressure regulator or should I save money and...

    Yard Crashers

I caught this last night. I love having the ability to search for shows by keyword with my cable box, I just type in "brew" or "beer" and come up with random stuff like this yard crashers show..love it. Anyway, very nicely done, though the landscape designers didn't seem to know much about...

Winter Warmer w/ pumpkin, spices & trappist yeast

This beer is either too young (kegged for 3 weeks) or got infected. Right now it tastes like bandaids. It would have (and still may) turn out nice. It has a great trappist yeast flavor with a hint of pumpkin. next time im baking the pumpkin to sanitize and more spice!

    Debate About Yeast Starters

Well, there was the vital piece of info I was missing: higher pitching rates = better flavor or less off flavors This was news to me. Seemed like a smaller amount of yeast would eventually multiply itself up enough to get the job done either way with the same resulting flavor, but the...

    Debate About Yeast Starters

Seems like eveyone and their brother stresses about making a yeast starter. I have around two dozen 5 gallon batches under my belt, with 10 or so being partial mash or all-grain. I have never made a starter. I use White Labs or Wyeast everytime and have never had an trouble. Even with an OG...

My First AG Adventure Yesterday - Caramel Pale Ale

i soaked the wort chiller in a bleach water solution. in the past i used about 3 ounces of bleach in 2-3 gallons of cold water. only recently have i learned this is wayyyy to much and that bleach can take up to a half hour to sanitized. i used to just dunk my equipment in it and rinse with hot...

My First AG Adventure Yesterday - Caramel Pale Ale

Something went wrong, it tastes strongly like bandaids, i can't drink it. I think it was because I used bleach to sanitize.

AHS Pliny vs. the real thing

I have a PTE clone from AHS sitting in the 2ndary right now about to be bottled this weekend. I could not believe the amount of dryhops, it's like a softball of hops floating around! This one smells fantastic. I have never tried the real thing, it's hard to find decent beer in the sticks on the...

    What's it like to own/run a LHBS?

Hello, LHB Shop Owners/Managers/Employees present or past (and anyone else with experience): I was wondering what it's like to open/run a homebrew supply store. I can find very little info on opening a shop so I thought I'd ask on here. I often and wonder what it's like and how to get...

    cooling wort with sanitary ice

Thanks for all of the info everyone! On Saturday I dropped the clean chiller into the boiling pot and, while it did stop the boil instantly, it came right back up to boiling after 5minutes or so (I'm still on the stove top, propane burner has been ordered!). I do hate wasting so much water with...
