3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller, Conical Fermenter" by Brewha

Well, I haven't seen anything on this specific topic. I've had a 120v HERMS mash system for a over a year now but have been using propane for the boil. Recently, I've been looking to go electric on my brew kettle. Through that search, I discovered the 3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller...

No Krausen in Bottle Conditioning beer?

I just realized this post had fairly recently been resurrected! Since my original post, I have seen "it" with carb tabs, but not when I've primed with sugar in solution (like an entire batch). Recently I've wondered if it was a carb-tab thing...that is, if the carb tabs were fully dissolving...

    Roof-top Hops

Thanks! Unfortunately, I think part of it was that the original premise of "roof-top hops" didn't pan out because I had to move. Then again, when you think about it, moving the hops and getting what I did out of them was amazing. One lesson I learned is that I suspect I wouldn't have gotten...

    Noooooooo!!!

Well, I am somewhat reassured. When I got the rhizome from Fresh Hops it was the a about pencil thick and 6" long. So, to go from that to what it did in a year was amazing. I suspect it'll be OK...who knows it might like it's new pot, new compost and bigger holes for the roots to grow...

    Noooooooo!!!

We've been renting for a year in the current house in San Diego. Part of the deal is we have a "gardner". Prior to today, this "gardner" trims the lemon tree virtually every 2 weeks (lemons on branches, new growth, flowers, etc). On another occasion, they lopped off a flower spike from...

    Specific hops for san diego?

Last year, I did Centennial and Chinook. The Centennials died back early and didn't do much...but are the first to sprout this year. The Chinook took off like crazy: Over 20' tall as a first year plant! They grow in 20" pots, back-yard, north facing. Here they were up on the balcony:

It's Barleywine time again and I have some yeast questions

That's quite a story! I can't imagine 1.165 wort! Granted, my wort was "only" 1.116. But it attenuated to 1.019 on only 5 weeks, and likely less than that. The fact that I pitched on essentially a "double" yeast cake...from 8.5 gallons of 1.054 pale ale, subseqently used to ferment 6 gal...

It's Barleywine time again and I have some yeast questions

Good call. Clearly your beer isn't finished attenuating. If you haven't read Ray Daniel's Book on "Designing Great Beers", Ray talks about different yeasts used for Barleywine. One interesting fact he reports after performing regression analysis on all second round NHC Barleywines with...

It's Barleywine time again and I have some yeast questions

Well, all this talk about folks' high gravity beers not self carb'ing has me slightly concerned. Sort of surprised by that. Enough so that I went and roused the yeast in all my bottles (only been a week) of Old Monster. I live right around the corner from Alesmith (I know, poor me). I'll...

It's Barleywine time again and I have some yeast questions

How did you ruin it? Bottle bombs? Wrong yeast for style? I don't understand...

It's Barleywine time again and I have some yeast questions

I should have mentioned, when I pumped my wort to the fermenter from the boiler, I had a siphon sprayer on the end of my tubing, which likely also helps I am sure. It's something like 2.99 at northernbrewer, probably the same at other places. Pure oxygen is likely the gold standard, but if I...

It's Barleywine time again and I have some yeast questions

I brewed "OLD MONSTER" on Nov 8th, bottled Dec 12th. Yeast was WLP001. I made a 1L starter and pitched on a pale ale. 3 weeks later I brewed a robust porter, pitched on the pale ale cake, right in the conical. 2 weeks later I brewed OLD Monster. For that, I actually drained the yeast...

    Roof-top Hops

Hop Harvest 2009: Well, ended up with just the one Chinook producing. 3.37 oz total. Guess that earns me a solid "meh". Of course, that's just the one, so if the others would have done something, I would have been in business. One other chinook suddenly started to take off...we'll see if...

American IPA Bell's Two Hearted Ale Clone (close as they come)

Well, the substitution of Victory for the Vienna (required due to Home Brew Mart being out of Vienna at the time) nevertheless resulted in a spectacular beer. Whether it tastes like TH is any one's guess...But it is an amazing IPA, and I'd be apt to keep the recipe the way I brewed this one...

    Stone XI Anniversary Clone

Kegged this bad boy last night. Went from 1.085 to 1.017. Nearly 82% attenuation! So, finished the predicted > 9% ABV. Got it on gas, likely will benefit from some additional aging, though its a good one. I'm curious how the substitution for the normal pale malt with Marris Otter will pan...

    Rhizome Conundrum

Mine all first came up. Within a week in fact. This one really lagged however, and then the shoots withered away. Another is over 20' tall and covered with hops (first year no less) though it is Chinook. Same pots. Same soil. Same watering schedule. I don't understand that, but it was...

    Rhizome Conundrum

That's what I'm leaning towards. Seems it'd have a better chance in the ground than in a plastic baggie in the fridge all winter...(whatever winter in SD is!) :)

    Rhizome Conundrum

Well, one of my hops started out looking good, then died back. Not sure the issue. I thought over-watering perhaps. Anyways, I decided to dig up the Centennial rhizome as everything looked dead. Plan was to put something else in the pot. Well, here is what I dug up: Don't know about...
