    Competition

Does anyone or has anyone competed with their home brew before? Anyone suggest one? I don't want to enter one where they take your recipe as their own and sell it like Sam Adams does. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

How does a Noob to All Grain learn the Grains?

Agreed on that book! I love it! But I have to admit in more hands in and like to test flavors myself because one persons description of it could be a little different than your own tastes Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

How does a Noob to All Grain learn the Grains?

Most homebrew stores allow you to chew on some grain to get an idea. I know a lot of people do smash (single malt and single hop) recipes to get to know base malts, hops and yeast strains. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Efficiency

Thanks for the reply, that's helpful. So why would you do the efficiency calculating before the boil! Since you haven't boiled off the excess water wouldn't the efficiency be lower than if you did it after boil? I brewed a batch today and took the measurements and readings after the boil, and...

    Efficiency

It seems that brew software defaults at 75% efficiency. Plus in threads on here I see everyone striving for that. Is it bad to get above 75% Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Multiple shoots

So this may be a very dumb question but do you need a separate string for every hop shoot the comes up from the same plant? Last year I only had one bine so it wasn't an issue but now I have 4 or 5. In the pics on here it looks like everyone only has one bine climbing. Sent from my iPhone...

    Starter for 10 gallon batch

I have always only done 5 gallon batches. This weekend I'd like to make 10 gallons of a recipe that just doesn't seem to last long in my house. To save money could I just use one packet of 1056 with a good starter? If so, how much dme to water do I need? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Is this my hops sprouting?

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't think I'll have an abundance of shoots. Shortly after posting this they all snapped... We've had really high winds today and the chicken wire I had protecting it must have come loose and broke them all. There is a tiny bit of the broken shoots above the surface...

    Is this my hops sprouting?

Last year I planted a centennial rhizome and when they sprouted they were green and leafy. Today I found this where I planted it. It doesn't look at all like it did last year but it looks like sprouted hops when I googled it Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Just peachy

Usually one package of yeast is sufficient for 5-6 gallons

    Just peachy

First off I would buy the equipment needed, like an auto siphon, so you don't oxidize your wine while racking and to limit the sediment you transfer. Also I would buy a hydrometer to determine the gravity and potential alcohol in your must. The hydrometer will also be a good guide for when to...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Imperial Pumpkin Pie Ale

I was inspired by your recipe so I brewed up my own. My recipe is different but I made mine 9.3% abv and used the same spice mixture. Came out amazing! Just thought I'd share

Business Ideas: Wanted to hear your thoughts.

I don't think it wouldn't work because I believe if you work hat enough and do everything right anyone can be successful in anything. But one thing to consider is not just your financial commitment to your family. Running a brew pub involves long, late night strenuous hours. You will have...

    Outdoor brewing-swarms of wasps!!

I live in New England so we do get cold nights. Today is a beautiful 70 degree day. I really wanted to get out for the day but now I'm stuck home till night time so I can reclaim my equipment. I don't dare leave my equipment out front and leave my house. My husband would kill me! Lesson...

    Outdoor brewing-swarms of wasps!!

It's horrible. I have a white faced hornet and at least 10 wasps in the little that's left in my pot and they're all over the outside of it too. I hate to leave my expensive equipment outside because i live on a main road but they swarm me every time I go out there! This ha never happened to...

    Outdoor brewing-swarms of wasps!!

So I brew both beer and hard cider and I brew outdoors. Today with my cider I had swarms of wasps and flies all around my setup and in my pot! I am absolutely petrified of bees, especially in those quantities but aside from that I'm afraid of infection. Anyone else with the same issues?

    ginger apfelwein, how much ginger?

So I'm making an apfelwein and I wanted to add some ginger to it. I have crystallized ginger on hand so I will be using that. How much should I use for a 6 gallon batch?

    Favorite base grain and why?

What's your favorite base grain and why? I love Maris Otter. It's malty, kind of bready and smooth. I use it in pretty much all my beers
