    $2.50 Digital Thermometer

This seems like a good deal, not sure on the quality though. http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/60582/meritline-digital-probe-thermometer-with-lcd-display-2.50-dual-car-adapter-black

    Berliner Weisse

To clarify, raspberry syrup. And, add to the glass when pouring.

    Berliner Weisse

Try going more sour next time and add essence of woodruff or raspberry for a traditional Berliner Weisse. I haven't tried, but I believe that's how the Germans do it.

    Disappointed with Newcastle

I got it from Cost Plus World Market, so who knows how long it sat there. It may have just been really old, but the aroma was of skunk and the taste was of skunk, just like the animal.

    First Setup

That kit looks pretty good. I currently have just a 8 gal aluminum pot from a restaurant supplier (forget which one) that was a good price. The better investment to start with would be an immersion chiller. You can always put any thermometer in the boil, and a 5 gal batch is small enough that...

    Disappointed with Newcastle

It was a make your own 6 pack, so I thought I'd try it. They didn't have Sam Smith Nut Brown, so I went with Newcastle. Should have gone with something else.

    Disappointed with Newcastle

I bought a bottle of Newcastle yesterday because I've never tried it and was very disappointed. The beer was so skunky I wanted to throw up. When I grabbed one I wasn't even thinking about the fact that it was in a clear glass bottle. I felt like it was good behind the intense skunkiness. I...

    Home Depot Water Coolers

I have a 5 gallon Home Depot water cooler that I converted into a mash tun via an HBT thread. I was wondering, if I were to buy the 10 gallon cooler, would I be able to just swap my hardware between the coolers or do I need new? Is the spigot hole the same dimensions on both coolers? Thanks...

Need help with capacitor for gear motor...

You can find Bodine caps HERE. It looks like the caps are made with a blade terminal package that would go into a slot in the motor. If that's how the motor you ordered is, then you'll have to find one that fits. As for size, it does seem a little small. Their 100 lb-in motor uses a 10...

Yeast Starter, do I need a new one?

You're right. I mean, I'm on here to make better beer too. If I didn't care, I probably wouldn't be scouring these forums for good info all the time. :mug:

Yeast Starter, do I need a new one?

I guess what I mean is that if you're feeling lazy (like I do sometimes), you can just direct pitch a smack pack or WL vial. I do try to use starters as much as I can because it does affect final beer flavor. A starter does make for better beer, but RDWHAHB. It will be beer in the end one way...

    BeerSmith 2.0

I didn't see where anyone else answered this, but I did find that you can change the options for using a stir plate if you think the growth factor is too high. I did. I think default is something like 2.66, which is why it seems it is so high. You can change it so that you get results closer...

Yeast Starter, do I need a new one?

I just started all grain (2nd batch yesterday), and it's not as difficult as you would think.

Yeast Starter, do I need a new one?

With the starter you made, you should have enough cells to ferment properly. I would just go ahead and use it. If you want to increase the cell count more or recheck vitality, you can make a new starter, but you should be fine. You never NEED a starter, but they are helpful for checking...

    Meijer Spring Water

I would use my home well water, but the problem is that my water has arsenic and I have to use bottled water. I have a RO drinking water, but it would take forever to get enough water out of that system to brew with, and then I'd have to add a bunch of minerals back anyway. I am really...

    Meijer Spring Water

I did use it for a pale ale AG brew, and it seemed to be ok. I want to know because I am brewing a stout, and want to have some idea of how acidic the mash will be and if I need to balance it.
