    IPA Dry Hoppy

I do love hops, but I was trying to maintain within the realm of IPA as opposed to IIPA. Beersmith calculates that my beer will be 7.05% ABV (1.067 OG and 1.016 FG) - within style range of 5.5% - 7.5%. Color 11.2 - within 6 - 15 range. IBUs 75.8 - slightly above the 40 - 70 range. Chinook were...

    IPA Dry Hoppy

OK...I'm new so that's certainly good advice on the 3-5 days. Definitely going for hoppy...although bitter is the main goal, so the 60 min addition is going to be the commander of the army. I know secondary is a highly controversial subject, but for now I'm going to continue using it mainly to...

    IPA Dry Hoppy

On to the third batch and thought I would experiment a bit with a recipe. Here's the plan... 9.25 lbs Pale LME 1.00 lb Crystal Malt (22L) 1.00 oz Chinook 60 min (13%) 1.50 oz Centennial 25 min (8.8%) 1.00 oz Cascade 5 min (5.5%) Wyeast 1056 Question is how much to dry hop...

    Using R/O water for brewing.

I'm new to this whole beer making process...but it sure disappoints me to go back to purchasing drinking water at the store when I invested in the water softener and RO system. My knowledge to is very limited on this subject but I would love to have such a table...

    American Wheat or Cream Ale?

jjones...that's some good stuff, hilarious! So she's actually not feeling well today, so I stayed home to take care of her...eh humm...I mean brew some beer. After getting her medicine and making her lunch, I told her I was going to run to the homebrew store. Came back with ingredients for the...

    Not enough DME?

    Would late extract addition help?

    Not enough DME?

I am making a Cream Ale as follows following a NB recipe... 0.75 lbs Honey Malt 0.25 lbs Biscuit 6 lbs of Pilsen LME 1 oz Cluster Hops The local store did not have LME Pilsen but they did have DME. In switching from 6 lbs of LME to DME, I bought 4 lbs according to suggested advice. I...

    American Wheat or Cream Ale?

OK, now that my primary fermenter is free of my first batch, I would like to start my second batch. I want this one to be a beer my wife and friends can enjoy that isn't as strong as the IPA I just brewed. My wife usually likes wheat ales (she's not too big on hops) so I was planning on an...

    First Brew Questions

Well, my replacement auto-siphon arrived today so I decided to rack to the secondary fermenter. I took an FG reading of 1.012, so that means my IPA will have an ABV of 6.26% according to BeerSmith. I will probably leave it one week as is...add the dry hops and leave for another week...then...

    First Brew Questions

OK...some more questions for my first brew... 1. I will likely rack to the secondary 7-10 days from brew day, depends on when my auto-siphon arrives (thanks to Northern Brewer for excellent customer service...the first one was broken in the original shipment). Are there any signs to tell me to...

    First Brew Questions

Well, yesterday was my first brewday and everything went pretty smoothly thanks to all the help on this website. The brewkit I used was Northern Brewer's Three Hearted Ale which is an American IPA with specialty grains. Recipe was.... 1 lbs Briess Caramel 40 (specialty grains) 9.15 Gold...

    Full boil?

Too much math coming.... https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/full-boil-vs-partial-boil-hops-utilization-88417/ I just read this thread and now I'm a little worried. I'll try and reason out my concern. If I assume Northern Brewer made this recipe based on a partial boil (which they did...

    Full boil?

Thanks for all the input. The yeast is Safale US-05 Ale Yeast. The recipe actually says 78 F or lower...so it sounds like most of you are suggesting lower. I'm not really worried anymore since the ice bath worked faster than anticipated. I'll wait until at least 70. I have a granite canning...

    Full boil?

Just to clarify this recipe calls for adding all the extract at the beginning of the boil.

    Full boil?

OK, I just received the NB kit. The hops are all 8.8% AA. Advice on adjustments needed for the full boil? I just can't see any reason to go with the partial. Also, did a test run of an ice bath tonight. In only about 20 min I got to 80 deg F...I think I'm going to hold off on the wort chiller...

    Full boil?

This is an American IPA. The current hop schedule is... 1 oz Centennial (60 min) 1 oz Centennial (25 min) 2 oz Centennial (5 min) 1 oz Centennial (Dry Hop) Are the hops added directly in the wort or do I use a bag? I've seen both.

    Full boil?

I'm preparing for my first brew and most of the discussion/videos I've read instruct to boil 2.5 gal and then add 2.5 gal in the fermenter. I purchased an 8 gal aluminum kettle so I have the ability to do a full boil...I'm assuming I would start with about 6.5 gal. I tested my stove and it takes...

    Passive Oxide Layer

I just bought my first brew kettle in the form of a 32 qt aluminum "steamer" typically used for tamales. $19.99 seemed like a great deal. So, I just tested the boiling potential of my gas stove. With two burners going it took about 1 hour (from starting with cold water) to get 6 gal boiling...
