    Morebeer Brewbuilt Kettles...Thoughts?

At $300 you're almost at the top of the line. What are the Blichmann's going for these days? Those are about the only kettles I hadn't looked at recently. Check out SS Brew Kettle. It appears to be the same pot, but it's $25 cheaper and it comes with a dip tube. Then there's MegaPot. Or for an...

    Competiion question

I contacted the organizer and the beers are placed in a fridge. When it fills up they have access to a walk-in cooler. Thanks for all the feedback. Especially the shipping advice. Shipping seems like a lot of work, but maybe something I'll do next time around. I happened to be driving by the...

    Competiion question

I'm considering entering my first competition. When you submit a beer a few days or a week ahead of the judging date, do they stick them in a fridge? I don't want to put my beer through a couple rounds of temperature swings. So I was wondering, do you ever chill your beers before a...

    Easy Wide Mouth Bubbler Modification

Drilled #2 stopper - that fits on the inside of the spigot commonly used in the bottling bucket. That is, screw on the spigot, then inside the bucket push the drilled #2 stopper into the big opening of the spigot. A 90 degree plastic elbow bend goes into the stopper and an inch or two piece of...

    National Homebrew Day Giveaway!

I started an online group for friends who have dabbled with, considered dabbling with, or heard of dabbling with homebrewing. It's got a lot of folks who don't live close enough to come brew with me. They don't post much but they all read everything I put out there for them, including many links...

Hop Spider and late hop additions

I had the same problem last week recirculating into a paint strainer bag. After running the pump for a few minutes I looked down and there was inches of wort in the pot around the bag and gallons of wort in the bag! I took my metal spoon and stirred / scraped the inside of the bag and that let...

    National Homebrew Day Giveaway!

Every time I brew I invite a friend or relative over to help. They all get a little bit of the bug and ask to come back and help again. Almost got my borther to switch from extract to all grain.

Rice Hulls - do I include them in Mash water calculation?

Good to know. Next time I'll cut the rice hulls down 75%.

Having trouble getting an accurate hydrometer reading

You're better off starting new threads than reviving nearly four year old ones. What's the temperature of the liquid when you take your readings? Have you tested it with water at 60F? If so, does it give you a 1.000 reading?

Rice Hulls - do I include them in Mash water calculation?

Thank you both for the tips. I figured I was overboard. I was using 25% rye, 2.5 lbs, split between malt and flakes. I couldn't start until around 5pm and didn't want to risk a stuck sparge keeping me out in the dark any longer than normal. How much hulls would you recommend in this case?

Rice Hulls - do I include them in Mash water calculation?

If I have 12 lbs of grain, and 1 lb of rice hulls, when I'm calculating mash water do I include the rice hulls? They don't have anything to extract, but they absorb water. So if I want, say, 1.5 qts per 1 lb., do I add 12 * 1.5 = 18 quarts, or do I use 13 * 1.5 = 19.5 qts? I know, not much...

    Creating My First Recipe

I use brewtoad. Pick your ingredients, setup your hop additions, it'll run calculations for you. And it's free, though you could buy a Pro subscription there's no need when you're getting started.

You beat me to it. My second batch was an accidental sour. Of sorts. One friend asked if it was a barley wine and when I started telling folks it was they thought it was great.

    Rye Pale Ale

Have you considered adding some rice hulls to help avoid a stuck sparge? I'm hoping to make a Rye Pale Ale myself this weekend. Haven't worked out the recipe yet but I'd been leaning towards (and I'm making these numbers up now, but these are the grains I've been considering): 7 lbs 2-Row...

Vanilla Beans - Soak or don't soak

I soak mine in bourbon. The last porter I made with vanilla beans I used 2 Madagascar bourbon vanilla beans - 0.2oz when weighed. I took a knife and split them to expose the insides, and sliced them into 1-2 inch strips. Soaked in 2 oz bourbon for 8 days, which was just enough to cover them...

    Beer Math with Brett Shegogue

    @passedpawn challenge accepted FG = OG - ( OG * Atten.) ABV = (OG - FG) * .131 Substitute FG: ABV = (OG - (OG - (OG*Atten.))) * .131 ABV = (OG - OG + (OG*Atten.)) * .131 ABV = (OG * Atten.) * .131 Taking your assumption of 76% attenuation: ABV = OG * 0.76 * 0.131 ABV = OG * 0.10 ABV = 0.1 * OG...
