How do I avoid over-carbonating my beer?

Here's a table that will help.

What should I do with my extra fridges?

All your really have to do is mess with the existing thermostat. Here's a thread (which I think should be a sticky) that tells you how to accomplish it without buying any external controller.

    Why is my wort darkening?

Does the beer come out darker than expected?

Rusty I am... Did mess up?

My understanding is that the concentration of bacteria in most municipal water supplies is extremely low (this is why there is chlorine in municipal water). Most of the ones that are able to survive are typically not happy in acidic, high osmotic conditions of wort. High yeast pitching rates...

    Innacurate Hydrometer

    I see. It's calibrated at 20 C = 68 F. Sure it says it's calibrated at 68. Just in a different language :-)

    Hello new here

Welcome to the forum. There is a lot here that will help you. The simplest way is to do brew in a bag, where you only need 1 pot which serves as a mash tun and a boil pot. The link explains more. A mash tun is just a vessel that you mash in (mix hot water and cracked grain) to convert...

Hi, I'm BobbiLynn and I love beer

I'd use it too, but don't judge what is possible by what you get.

    Innacurate Hydrometer

You're only off by 5 points. My bet is that it is due to dissolved stuff in your water. Distilled water should read spot on, but not tap water. Get a second hydrometer and see if the readings match. You could standardize it by dissolving sugar in water at different concentrations and then...

    supportive wife?

How long have you been married? After 19 years of marriage, I'm just happy if I get grudging acknowledgement that I might possibly have a point :o Buy some beer from the store that is the same style as your brew. Drink a couple yourself. Bottle some of your own in the same bottle. Serve...

    Building a Brew Room

Transfer pump, gotta agree. I didn't have one for 21 years. Bought one and there is no way I'd do without. Recirculating is a breeze. But the main reason is pumping from the patio to the fermenting room in the basement. No way am I ever carrying carboys up and down those steps again.

    Growler Refill Laws???

The last time I was there, Rivertowne Pour House in Monroeville, PA (outside of Pittsburgh) would take other people's growlers and replace them with their own (basically, you trade in someone else's growler for one of theirs). The brewer offered "prisoner exchanges" to the other breweries.

Accounting for Temp Lost During Mash In?

It seems to me that if your procedure is making you miss 1 or 2 degrees low, then keep your procedure the same except increase your strike temp by 1 or 2 degrees. Your idea of compensating the temp is what I'd go with.

    Any environmental scientists out there?

Here's another idea - brewing is clearly an interest of yours. How about looking at energy use at microbreweries in NJ, and seeing if there are things you can do to make them more sustainable. For example: uses for spent grain, capturing CO2 generated by fermentation to grow hops in a...

    Any environmental scientists out there?

The problem with rainwater in NJ is that it doesn't go back into the ground because it is diverted into storm drains, and ultimately into streams and rivers. The more hardscape there is, the less percolation area you have. One way to alleviate this is to catch the rainwater and have it...

This grain hopper extension is for the dogs.

The first batch we used it on was 44 lbs, and that took about an hour and a half of playing with the setup to get it right. The second batch was another 40 lb batch, and that one took about 45 min. This last batch was only 23 lbs, and it took 20 min. So, about a pound a minute right now, but...

This grain hopper extension is for the dogs.

Yep. Burned out too many drill batteries. I brew for my cycling club's socials, so it seemed like a good idea. Here's a post with video of it in action: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/not-drill-112378/index3.html#post4382223
