Ever Had One Of Those Days?

The reason I brewed today was that the wife was at work and the kids at the grandparents, so I was alone. This brew was definitely full of blood, sweat and tears, and maybe a few bugs too.

Ever Had One Of Those Days?

I brewed today, first time with my Top Tier rig. A simple recipe I saw in the recent issue of BYO, Gose. So, I move my rig from the garage outdoors and in the process gash my knee open. As I am setting up, a swarm of love bugs invades my house. For those of you who dont know, these bugs are here...

Need Ideas for an in line filter between BK and Plate chiller

I use hop bags for my pellets, but I still get some trub picked up. I am going to use my plate chiller and heard it can clog with trub. So I was thinking of making a CPVC tube with a filter screen in it to catch the break before the chiller. Maybe fill it with rice hulls? Will the rice hulls...

Need Ideas for an in line filter between BK and Plate chiller

how does a hopback work? From want I read, you use a bed of whole leaf hops to filter the beer. My concern is that the hops you filter with will increase the hop profile of the beer. In many beers this could be bad. Is there another way to use it?

    Starting over

Nice build so far. Good luck in your residency. I am a Trauma Surgery ARNP and the surgeons I work with love my homebrew. They are always hitting me up for it. As a bonus, most of them are beer aficionados, so they frequently buy me commercial beers they like. The latest was Celebrator which...

    My Brew Rig

My new top tier brew rig. The top pic is where my March 809 pump is and the bracket above is for mounting my plate chiller. I set it up as a 3 tier system, so I can use gravity to help move everything along. The pump is there to help pump the wort through the chiller, plus if in the future, I...

Need Help/Advice Assembling My Top Tier Stand

I am a very nice person. And it is easier for someone who has built one to be able to give advice. On the burner they have a spring and the needle valve screws onto the nozzle which in turn screws onto the burner with a spring. But if you tighten the nozzle/valve combo, the air damper will not...

Need Help/Advice Assembling My Top Tier Stand

As I said, I really needed the advice of someone who owns/assembled one of these. That's why I didn't attach a link or video. Someone who reads this and owns one will know what I am talking about. It was written in haste as I was in mid build. I appreciate you guys stopping by and trying to...

Need Help/Advice Assembling My Top Tier Stand

Ok, I have it configured the way I want. I am building my manifold. In the video they say not to use teflon tape on the brass piece that attaches to the black iron tee, but in the video they have applied tape to it. I am confused. Also, are the black iron pieces hand tightened only? Also...

    Blichmann Top Tier Stand Help

Ok, so my new Top Tier stand arrived today in 5, relatively heavy boxes. My weekend project will be assembling this beast. Does anyone have any advice for assembling this rig? Second, I know I will have to provide the pipe for the gas manifold. I am used to using black iron pipe and the...

    Oak Barrel Question

I think I know what happened. There beer was still fermenting and produced co2. This increased the pressure inside the barrel.

    Oak Barrel Question

Ok, Im using a used oak barrel (5 gallon) I got from Farmhouse. I think it had a rum like liquor in it before. I dumped about a gallon of rum in it before I transferred my BW into it. Its now been in there for just over 2 weeks. I am now noticing a thick, maple syrup like ooze coming from the...

A Great Reason to Use A Blow Off Tube

I brewed my stout yesterday and put it in the fridge for fermentation yesterday and came home today from work to find this. It actually bowed up the lid of the fermenter. I am crying about the gallon or so of lost beer. That bottom drawer is half full or wort. You cant see the ceiling, but the...

    Rolled Oats for a Stout

I am making a RIS and at the last minute I decided to add a half pounds flaked oats for body. I don't have a LHBS, so I went to the Fresh Market and all they had was rolled oats. Can I use them instead of flaked barley/oats? ANy special prep? I am brewing tomorrow so any advice will help...
