How do I know if my starter is working?

It’s been on the stir plate for about 7 hours. It looks the same as when I first pitched. What should I be seeing? 1.5 liters, OG 1.034, 1 packet WLP001. Pitched at 75 degrees.

How important is temperature with a starter?

I live in a hot climate and my ambient temps in my apartment are mid 70’s at night mid 80’s during the day. Will this be ok while I’m at work? If not I’ll put it in the room with A/C but I prefer not to run it when I’m not at home. If I have to I will.

Is 2 white labs packs enough??

Thanks everyone....Maybe I’ll go with Safale-05 this time around. I haven’t bought the yeast but planned on 001. It’s a The Wise ESB clone.

Is 2 white labs packs enough??

Only one day off from work this week and I forgot the starter. My plan was to just buy two packs, but the brewer’s friend calculator says I need 3 packs. The planned OG is 1.061....really don’t want to drop $25 on yeast lol.

    Thermometer calibration and verification?

Just get the Thermapen! Once you have one you'll wonder how you ever brewed without it. It's crazy accurate and fast. Battery lasts years too. As brewers we really need the accuracy in order to maintain consistency.

    Pilsner recipe with Ale yeast

One of my usual recipes is essentially a Munich Helles fermented with WLP001. It tastes great, and it's always a crowd pleaser for those that don't drink craft beer. That's the beauty of home brewing. We aren't held captive to style guidelines. Do what you want it will be beer.

    Hello from L.A.!

Hello everyone I'm getting back into brewing after a 3 year hiatus. I used to brew all grain, but stopped when I moved to a new city and couldn't take any of my equipment with me. I guess getting settled into a new home got in the way and it kind of got put on the back burner. I've been...
