Split batch, one carboy is further along than the other

The fermentation got stronger at 49, so I'll just let it go on. I'll pull the one out for a D-rest into the air conditioned room when it is ready, and then the other for that.

Split batch, one carboy is further along than the other

I made a lager last weekend, 5.5 gallons, that I split between 2 3g Better Bottle carboys so they fit in my fridge. I first let the wort settle in a single glass carboy, then split it by siphoning. The first carboy got all clear wort since I held the siphon up midway and the second got some of...

Convert an older 10g Blichmann to electric?

The more I look at this the less interested I am. It sounds like without doing electrical work I would only get marginal benefits from going electric since the 120v line limits the power. Maybe I'll look at propane instead. That's an easier solution except that puts me outside and watching...

Convert an older 10g Blichmann to electric?

Maybe the microwave has a dedicated 20a outlet. I'd have to check. It's an old house.

Convert an older 10g Blichmann to electric?

OIC, this is in addition to the stove. I'm looking to remove the stove from the process. The Blichmann coil has a twist lock plug for a 20amp outlet. Does that mean I need to have a dedicated line run for it? That would more than triple the cost if I need an electrician.

Convert an older 10g Blichmann to electric?

Would that be enough to bring 7-8 gallons to a boil?

    Starting Over

I now have 5 gallons of lager in my fermentation fridge. None of the brew day went as planned, and it was frustrating. A lot of it was due to not using the equipment in such a long time, but a lot was also working in my remodeled kitchen. I had the old routine down pat. I worried about the...

Convert an older 10g Blichmann to electric?

I did my first brew in a number of years yesterday and it was a frustrating experience. I use a Blichmann kettle on top of my stove burner, a high-output Bosch stove, but still just a kitchen stove not a commercial type. I'd been doing it that way without much trouble in the past but yesterday...

What I did for beer today

7 minutes from flame out, my first brew in 4 years. I had to do a lot more than I did before, between all the equipment needing cleaning and our new kitchen since last time. The countertops needed protection, the faucet doesn't take a hose, I don't have a counter at the right height anymore...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

That's still a lot of beer. My friends are impressed with the one I have. If I had 5 on tap I'd never get them to leave.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I've go lager yeast ready to do my Czech Bohemian Rhapsody Pilsner this coming weekend. I'm waiting on my bag from Wilser though. I can't really brew without it. I also need a hose from my kettle but that I can get at Lowes. I threw out all my old hoses from 4 years ago. They were due for...

    Beer used to be better

I live in Brooklyn, which you would think is the home to a gazillion breweries but it's not. It has a few though. But on a driving trip out to Santa Fe last summer we would always stop for food and beer at a place where the local brews and BBQ were available. Some were good, some weren't. I...

Do I need to wait with a smack pack if I'm using it in a starter?

My stir plate kept working through the night, but then at around 3pm or so the magnetic pill spun out. By that time though the most active fermentation had stopped and the vortex was reaching the bottom again.

Where did you get your bag?

The only problem I ever had with my Wilser bag was that I lost it. I ordered another one yesterday and it is already on the way.

    Starting Over

I went through my equipment to make sure I didn't need anything else, and of course I found that I do. My BIAB bag is missing. I have no idea where it is nor does my wife. We just had our kitchen remodeled and everything that was in it was touched at some point and I don't remember seeing it...

My shamelessly cheap $12 DIY stir plate

I pulled mine out after a 4 year hiatus. It took many tries to get the stir bar going but once I remembered that you have to start the fan on fast, not slow, it caught. I then used it for my starter and the stir bar caught on the first try every time I restarted it. I still haven't enclosed...

Help me take my BIAB system up to the next level

Well here it is June and I only yesterday started my first new batch by making the yeast starter. It is currently spinning away on my DIY stir plate. And here is the funny thing. As I was going through my equipment, looking to see what I have, I'd totally forgotten about the sous vide machine...

    Starting Over

About 6 months ago I had another false start with this and I was looking at all the new stuff, in particular complete electronic brewing vessels. It has come a long way, but imagine how far along this is from 25 years ago! That's about when I started. I just looked and MoreBeer has Better...

Do I need to wait with a smack pack if I'm using it in a starter?

Given that it was about an hour from the time I asked it had already swelled to where it was obviously good. I've pitched all and it is happily spinning. Before I started I tried out my stir plate which has been sitting in a box for 3-4 years unused and I just couldn't get the pill to spin...

Do I need to wait with a smack pack if I'm using it in a starter?

Simple question. The yeast is Wyeast Bohemian Lager 2024. I was going to use it in a 2L starter on a stir plate for a 5g batch. It almost doesn't make sense to wait for it to swell since I'm giving it 2 days to multiply anyway.
