    Japan Hops Trading -

Actually, the shinshu wase found me. I wasn't expecting to get any more rhizomes this year so was very happy to receive an email from my friend. They've only been in the ground for the last 9 days and already all of them have sent up shoots. That means I now have 6 hops plants and three...

The rhizomes you sent me are doing well. Thanks again for that. I was also recently given some Shinshu Wase rhizomes from one of the dudes at Baird. If all goes according to plan I'll have some rhizomes to share next year.

    Home brewing in Japan

That Shiga Kougen beer sounds interesting, I'd like to give it a try some time. I was actually at the Taproom the other day as well and had The Great American Stout, which is a pretty heavily hopped stout. Definitely interesting to try such a departure from the typical style.

Hey Brendan, I just got back from a snowboarding trip to find my hops sending up shoots already! Really looking forward to seeing things take off! Thanks again. I'll be sure to include photos when the start filling out a bit. Cheers, B

Morning Brendan, Thanks for the offer and I'll be sending a PM shortly. I missed your message earlier about what to do during a typhoon to protect your plants. I've been gardening in Japan for a number of years now and live down near the coast (about 1km from Suruga Bay). Every year we get...

    Fruit beer secondary fermentation question

How long do you leave your beer on the fruit in secondary? I'm making an IPA mikan (Japanese orange) beer and want to match my bottling schedules so I think it'll be on the fruit for 10-14 days. Is this too long?

    Home brewing in Japan

Happy new year everyone. I just got back from an extended snow vacation and haven't brewed anything in a few weeks... looking at next weekend to do a Scotch Ale. Hope everyone is having a good year so far!

Dry hopping: How long is too long?

Thanks guys. As I suspected, just leave it. Hopefully it turns out as good as I imagine it will :)

Dry hopping: How long is too long?

Thanks IC. I wonder if dropping the temp down would also be a benefit at this point?

Dry hopping: How long is too long?

I've been drying hopping in my primary for a week now and today was supposed to be bottling day... unfortunately, I just realized that I have no where near enough caps. To make matters worse, I live in rural Japan so it's going to be 5 days before my delivery of supplies arrives. That means...

    Home brewing in Japan

If anyone is thinking of ordering some specialty malts I'd be interested in doing a group purchase... I'll even do all the leg work :)

    Home brewing in Japan

My house is damn cold in the winter. To keep my fermenter warm I wrap it with an old sleeping bag and have a small pet bed warmer (1700Y) tucked inside. That keeps it at a pretty constant 20C. To adjust the temp I very scientifically loosen or tighten the sleeping bag around the fermenter.

Got my sample from Bruhahops today. Wonderful smelling UK Challenger. I've got a recipe these will work in too! Going to have to bump up my brew schedule I think :)

Hi. I've never used this company but I remember reading in a thread somewhere that they ship rhizomes internationally. I think you have to contact them directly to get quotes on prices but I seem to remember that it costs something like 25$ for the paper work to get them shipped here...

    Home brewing in Japan

I actually used maple syrup I brought back from a friend's sugar shack in Ontario this summer. I reduced it before using it because I wanted to reduce the fermentable sugars so that some of the flavour sticks around. I used a little more than I intended (about 500ml) and my OG was on the high...

    Home brewing in Japan

For those Muntons water tanks, what would you suggest for the airlock? Did you use a stopper to go with it or some other way to seal it? I just got a first taste from a smoked maple porter I brewed up a few weeks ago (had to do something with the sample from the hydrometer ;) ). It is going to...

    Home brewing in Japan

Well, I just got two brews worth of ingredients. It'll either be a Scotch Ale or an IIPA. I'm leaning more towards the Scotch Ale because it'll take longer to finish... but my IPA supply is starting to run low. What a dilemma! On a related note, the honey nut brown ale I brewed last month...

Looking good! I'm waiting for some stuff to arrive by takkyubin. As soon as it gets here I'm off to enjoy the start of the long weekend!

Interesting. I guess the gasket doesn't matter much if you put the airlock at the back of the container. Is it pretty thin plastic? The reason I ask is because I wonder if it would be possible to put a spigot at the bottom to make a bottling bucket. I'll probably end up ordering a couple of...
