    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

Industrial lager, yes, by a long shot. Craft beer... It depends but for the most part yes. You have to remember that home brewing is technically illegal in Japan so getting supplies isn't easy!

    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

It's sooooo much more expensive to home brew in Japan than to just buy beer. Think like 10x the price for everything that you pay in America.

    Homebrew Fatigue

After my daughter was born I took a break for about a year to get used to my new lifestyle, responsibilities, schedules and stresses. I've been back at it since last November and have brewed four 5 gallon batches since then (fifth will be this weekend). You'll get used to the changes and find...

New Guy, Porter Stuck at 1.040 after 3 weeks

Tested with what? Hydormeter or refractormeter? When alcohol is present refractometers don't give accurate readings at all.

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

At the moment with Howard it's really tough to say what is going on. Whether it's Martinez's lack of interest in strong defenses, our poor defensive form because of injuries, his old age, pressure from the home fans (He's only conceded 9 goals all season in away matches), or what have you. The...

    Cold Brew vs "dry beaning"

No problem. I just rebrewed a batch of my coffee stout yesterday so it was all still fresh in my mind. I think the only time you'll have much problem with head retention is if you brewed or boiled the beans since that releases lots of oil (also using an oily espresso-like bean would be a...

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

I think it's hard to compare Howard to either of those keepers since they have quite different styles. The big problem with Howard recently is his control inside the box. He rarely seems to attack the ball. His distribution this season has been suspect as well.

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

When he decides to actually show up and play he's close to unbeatable... Unfortunately, he hasn't seemed very focused this season. It seems Robles recent form in the cup matches may have lit a fire under Howard... There have also been rumours of him living in the summer.

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

How we kept a clean sheet against Citeh with the terrible form our defence has been in this season is a small miracle! I think Everton will be very happy taking a point from that match...

    Cold Brew vs "dry beaning"

I find with cold brew coffee from roughly ground beans (bread crumb consistency) you get very little bitterness and oil extraction. You do get loads of flavour and aroma with this method though.

    Cold Brew vs "dry beaning"

I usually cold brew rather than dry bean since it allows for better control over flavour. I usually use a 10/1 (water/coffee bean) ratio, so for example 500ml of water to 50g of coffee bean. I don't fine grind the beans, they are more like the consistency of bread crumbs, and steep them for...

    Breakfast Stout Flopped but why?

In my experience the best way to add coffee is by cold brewing it and then adding it when bottling. Cold brewed coffee has a remarkably different taste from regular percolated coffee. You'll also get less oils extracted so it's less of a problem with head retention.

    Black ipa help

With a recipe like that I don't think you can call it an IPA at all. It looks like a heavily hopped stout to me. Which is fine of course if it suits your taste! IMO you don't need both the chocolate and the carafa III. I probably just use the carafa.

    Home brewing in Japan

Interesting idea. I'd be worried about infection but maybe there'd be enough alcohol...? Let us know how it goes! Happy new year!

Could using starsan be causing over carbonation?

Three batches of beer I think. The problem doesn't seem to be uniform though since it seems to be random bottles that are gushing.

Could using starsan be causing over carbonation?

I asked him about fermentation, the type and amount of priming sugar, the method of priming, etc. everything seems to be fine. I was leaning towards some kind of infection too. I was just wondering about the starsan since it acts as a yeast nutrient. It's not a product that I use so I have no...

Could using starsan be causing over carbonation?

But with bottle carbonation you are adding back in a small amount of fermentables to reach the desired volume of CO2, right? The reason I ask is that I have a friend who has been having an over carbonation problem and aside from wild yeast the starsan is the only other thing I was wondering about.

Could using starsan be causing over carbonation?

Any thoughts on this? Would/could the small amount of starsan left over from sanitizing cause over carbonation?

    Amarillo first wort hopping

Interesting. Thanks guys. Maybe I'll just use magnum as FWH on my next batch. I have a bunch of Amarillo now so availability isn't an issue. I actually don't have much experience at all with Amarillo since it's virtually unknown in Japan. I might try it at some point on a smaller batch just to...
