    biab

Just tried BIAB last night for the first time. Survey says...I love it! I have access to a 40 gallon Groen steam kettle in a commerical kitchen. I used a stainless steel basket they use for boiling and double bagged 5 gallon paint strainer bags from HomeDepot. Large clips to fold the lip of the...

What to do with leftover grains

I am going to piggy-back on his question and tap y'all's knowledge. I am making a batch of Pliny the Elder and will end up with the following leftover: .75 lbs 2-Row, .4 lbs Carapils, .4 lbs Crystal 45, .5 oz Simcoe hops, .75 oz Columbus hops. My plan is to do a 1 or 2 gallon batch. Your...

    Hibiscus Saison recipe

Looks good, I always do a hibiscus wheat in the spring. I think I will give your recipe a try. Generally I use the hibiscus only in the secondary but I've read of some putting a solid fist-full in the boil for the last 5 - 10 minutes too. They bleed a lot of color out in the boil. If you're...

    Simple BIAB Calculator

I'll have to test it this weekend. The cooks tell me it's a 26" diameter pot which, at full power, will boiloff nearly 3 gallons an hour! I think at a steady boil, top open, it will probably work out closer to 1.5 - 2 gallons an hour. If I punch those numbers in I get much closer to Vinnie's 8...

    biab

Thanks whiskeyjack, that will come in handy to doublecheck my figures. Do I want 6 gallons in my fermenter or a little over 5? I think my ingredients are geared for 5. Also, I think in reviewing Vinnie's recipe he is allowing for a lot of volume loss due to trub...which is nearly a non-issue...

    Simple BIAB Calculator

Ok, so I am tackling Pliny the Elder in a few weeks. Massive hop bill on this one. I would like to try out BIAB style with it. I have a question though based on Vinnie's recipe: Ingredients For 6.0 gallons (22.7 L) [Net: 5 gallons (18.9 L) after hop loss] 13.25 lb (6.01 kg) Two-Row pale...

    Pliny the Younger Clone

Hey scottland, maybe I didn't see it above. What was the total cost approximately for your 5 gal PTY batch? I know my totals for PTE come out to between $50 - $53 depending on current grain/hop costs. I'm doing another batch of PTE this weekend!

    Why so sugary tasting

Thanks guys, I appreciate your input. I've upped the hops a bit and it's helping to mellow the carmel sweetness. I also must brew on an electric stovetop that isn't great for a rolling boil. I am switching to a buddy's industrial steam-heated kettle that should do the trick. Thanks again.

    Why so sugary tasting

So the past two brews I have made have tasted too sugary to me, even though the finished gravity is dead on. Any words of wisdom as to why? Is it because I'm using malt extract instead of the "real deal"?
