What company makes the best Imperial Stout Extract Kit?

Try these guys.... I've been in the same boat you are - done a few extract batches and steeped some specialty grain. Not that my feet are wet, I'd like to try my hand at a little bit bigger beer. http://www.boomchugalug.com/shop-kits/beer/stout Cheers! tb

    Bottles

Wish I knew where to get them for free or had friends who GAVE THEM BACK when I gave them free beer. My return rate isn't that good. I think I'm going to stop buying them empty and start buying cases of beer with beer IN THEM first....

    Dry Hopping Filter Technique

Could you just buy a small reusable hop bag, sanitize it, and drop the pellets in the bag and then cram the whole thing into the secondary? I don't know much at all about kegging, but I have learned that 'straining' devices tend to get clogged - that'd be my only concern with your original idea...

    Bottles

I've read on this forum that some folks have had success with the bottles that have the screw-type bottlecaps on them. It depends on the make of the bottle , but the main piece of advice was to NOT use a butterfly capper, but a benchtop capper instead. I guess this is because the benchtop...

Beer showing no sign of fermentation

I'm probably way too young in the brewing hobby to be offering suggestions, but could you just repitch? If the original started working with the new, what would the harm be? Good luck, and sorry for the troubles! I've already learned a few tough brewing lessons as well and one thing's for sure...

Belgian Wit Question - to 'Swirl' or not to 'Swirl'

Hey guys, So I finished bottling my Belgian Wit (read: my failed attempt at a Belgian Watermelon Wit) last weekend and am hoping to try a bottle this weekend (exactly one week later - early I know) and I wanted to know.... Some folks say with beers of this style to swirl the bottle and...

First BIAB - looking for advice...

sok454 - you may be right. Either way I think I need to save up for that 10 gal kettle so I can do full 5gal boils. I don't really ever see myself going past that quantity at one time. To be honest, I really like the smaller batches as I like the diversity. It sounds like I need to boil up some...

First BIAB - looking for advice...

I've got my eye on a 10gal kettle ($180) on NB.com that would suit me just fine but I'm trying to not go crazy with expenses as I'm hoping to get a "fermentation chilling room" build underway in my garage soon, and the most expensive part (the window A/C unit) hasn't been purchased yet. Thanks...

First BIAB - looking for advice...

Not sure what you mean by a real burner - I just bought one of those 58,000 BTU turkey fryer burners for $29 from the local sporting goods store. It seems to do the trick, but I've been looking at the Dark Star burner in the NB catalog for the same price. I've been torn because the Dark Star...

First BIAB - looking for advice...

Hey thanks a lot for the advice! So could I use the BIAB kit and just start with a bit less water - maybe between 3.5 and 4gallons? Seems like if I start with 5.5 gallons of high quality H2O, it'd take me forever and a day to boil off to three gallons. I love this homebrewing thing, but DANG -...

First BIAB - looking for advice...

I'm looking to try my first BIAB after successfully brewing about 5 extract batches as new homebrewer, and I noticed the recipe in Norther Brewer's catalog and website for an oatmeal cookie brown ale. It says this is a 3 gallon batch, but to start, you must have the capacity to start with 5.5...

    7.5 Gallon Brew Kettle?

Might as well bring it back from the dead one more time? :) Maybe it's because we all get started at different times in the world of homebrewing and we're all learning these things at different times. I know I try to not break cardinal rule #1 of forum posting (thou shall not post questions...

    Fermentation Chiller v2

I have to say I was dead set on building a son of fermentation chiller, but having seen this, I may use my 2"EPS and invest in a small window unit and build out some shelving I already have in my garage. Suddenly seems much easier than swapping ice jugs and for pennies a day! Couple questions...

    Barleywine additions - ideas?

Well if I add fruit guess what I WON'T be doing to it? Boiling it! Oh man....long story. Raspberries Do sound intriguing, and I don't even like them that much. Decisions, decisions.....

    Barleywine additions - ideas?

Wood? Would I use oak cubes maybe? Oak cubes soaked first in Jack Daniels! That would be interesting... Cinnamon and vanilla beans - that sounds real interesting. Any idea on proportions?

    Barleywine additions - ideas?

I recently ordered a couple of 1 gal kits from Northern Brewer to play around with and try some different beer styles in limited quantity before deciding to brew a full 5 gallon batch. I started out with their new 1 gal. barleywine kit - everything went well and I'm finishing up primary now. Due...

    Fruit Beer Watermelon Wheat

Yeah, you're right. I'll finish it off and bottle it unless it just smells and/or tastes terrible on bottling day. I will say the aroma from the airlock seems to smell pretty nice though. Any advice you guys on how long to leave it in secondary? Guess I'll just watch it and check the gravity...

    Fruit Beer Watermelon Wheat

So pissed - just finished reading pretty much all 37 pages of this thread to discover that I'll most likely be dumping a 5 gallon batch of my Belgian Watermelon Wit due to the fact that I found this thread AFTER processing my watermelon in what I thought was a good idea. I brewed my Belgian Wit...

What are advantages of dry hopping?

If you're still using the same primary fermenter where you had the iodine mishap, I'd suggest replacing it. You can always keep it and use it as a 'sanitizing' bucket or something. Just a thought. Pay close attention to your temps and follow your instructions to the letter, and you should have...
