a film and white stuff on top of secondary :(

ok, well i've done quite a few beers and I have yet another first. I have a milky looking film on the top of my secondary. Also, on the rim of the liquid is actually white, milky looking stuff, it kinda looks like little sheets of paper cut up into confetti. I also just happen to have a glass...

Aging question, 2 of them... :)

Room temperature aging seems to make more sense, especially if there are "reactions" happening. The general trend is for things to slow down in the cold and speed up in th eheat.

Cold break, auto siphon, uhh, clogged, help!

Evan, I have the following strainer with a funnel.... Is this what you are using?? I would think it would for sure get clogged quickly. http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?products_id=2452

Cold break, auto siphon, uhh, clogged, help!

Ok, I have been having some problems recently. I use 1 tablet of wirlfloc in the last 15 minutes of the boil. I also put my immersion chiller in the last 15 minutes. After the boil is done I hook it up to the sink and chill it out. I usually shake the immersion chiller around to stir up...

How to do 10 gallon full boils, heater required?

Well, I am "aquiring" the kegs over the winter.... So I figured, the kegs need to be cut, drilled, parts added and i'll still need some burners anyway so why not do 10 gallon full boils while i'm waiting for my AG system to finish completion right? Unless i'm missing something, once I get my...

How to do 10 gallon full boils, heater required?

How to do 10 gallon full boils, heater required?

Ok, i've done about 10 5 gallon brews and i've found the beers I like to brew and I think i've become fairly good at it. I want to venture into 10 gallon full boils and then eventually go all grain. How many BTU of a heater is required to heat a keg up with 11 gallons + extract to boiling...

Boil & Cool my water, strange stuff in the bottom!

Thanks for the explanation.... My house was build in 1856 so I probably have lead around here somewhere! I will use cold water from now on.

Boil & Cool my water, strange stuff in the bottom!

I SEE! It just so happens that I am using HOT water and my hot water is cloudy sometimes. So you are assuring me this is harmless? Should I avoid putting it in the beer or just dump it in?

    Hopping up an IPA

Ugg, seeing as hops boiling while brewing makes me nautious I can not imagine what "hop tea" would do. Gross.

    Choices, choices......

I say pitch it as is. I have left a starter around for 4-5 days and got a fast vigorous fermentation. They seem to wake up quickly.

Boil & Cool my water, strange stuff in the bottom!

I am doing it to sanitize the water and remove chlorine. I hate buying water. I oxigenate by shaking the carboy, seems to work for me.

OG Supposed to be 1.06, got 1.07....

Thanks for your replies. I am boiling 5.5 gallons and with the addition of 8lbs LME I should end up with near 5 gallons of beer I would think.... Its "close" to the 5 gallon line but I end up with a lot of trub. I think in the future I will boil closer to 6 gallons of water.

Boil & Cool my water, strange stuff in the bottom!

Ok, its about time I asked this question. Here's my method for water. 3 gallons in brew pot 2.5 gallons in seperate boiling pot I boil the 2.5 gallons for 5 minutes and put in the freezer until i'm ready to add the wort to the carboy. When i'm adding the chilled 2.5 gallons, at...
