Glass carboy with hole on top

Man, this is a great idea! And as far as all the negativity goes, "a hater's gonna hate", especially when they've spent 500 bucks on their setup and you achieve the same result for 60! As far as the sides not being steep enough, just give it a shake or swirl every few days. Convention is the...

SMASH Is Slow Goin' On The Fermentation

If I had less fermentables why would my gravity reading still be so high? doesn't the gravity reading measure the sugars in a solution? Also I make starters normally so I figured it couldn't hurt.

SMASH Is Slow Goin' On The Fermentation

Hey all, I brewed a SMASH Maris Otter/Chinook on 3/22/13. I used US-05 with a starter, yeast nutrient and aerated with pure co2. My OG was 1.050 and I still have it in the primary because the blow off is still bubbling about once every ten seconds. I just checked my gravity and after almost...

Well, with so many people that confident in these coolers, mabe I should relax. One of the reasons that I decided to go with one these is because of their good rep. I'll give it a shot.

I guess this is a stupid question...

I've been brewing all grain for a while with a square cooler. It's gotten a little worn and I've bought cylindrical igloo cooler to replace it. Here's the problem, I use a digital probe thermometer with an alarm that goes of when the temp lowers or raises above what I set. It's awesome but the...

First time yeast starter... Holy Crap!

Hey Rick, I actually used firmcap with this one and I usually don't. This one was an extract kit I received as a gift, so I used a smaller pot and was concerned about boil over. Who knows? I'll brew again in a couple of weeks and try the same process. If I get the same thing, I'm sticking with it.

First time yeast starter... Holy Crap!

I enjoy making the starter as well. Now that I've had these results it takes the worry out of the whole yeast pitching process. By the time you're ready to add the yeast to your wort you know that it's already active and thriving. All you're doing by pitching it to the wort is giving it a huge...

First time yeast starter... Holy Crap!

Hey Rick. My OG was 1.047 and my temp was right at 70 degrees. I'm on my third day and she's still going like crazy.

First time yeast starter... Holy Crap!

Alright so this is my second brew using this yeast prep technique and I will definitely continue to use it. 1. Create and boil wort in flask using yeast nutrient. 2. Cool rapidly in an ice bath. 3. Aerate with oxygen using a stone. 4. Keep on stir-plate for 3 days This...

First time yeast starter... Holy Crap!

You've got a point. I'm actually going to be brewing another kit next week. a lemon coriander weis, so I'll have to try the same technique to see if I get similar results. I've just never had the yeast take off so fast before like this.
